Tr1sha | 336 comments “May” is the shortest name of a month in English, so our monthly challenge is to read one or more classic short stories of any length up to about 250 pages. Members may want to read stories by different authors, or part of a collection of short stories by a single author. This can include children’s stories if anyone wants to share their reading with a child in their family. It’s an opportunity to try less familiar authors or genres, or to read some old favourites again. Have fun!
Examples:
The Old Man and the Sea - Ernest Hemingway
The Overcoat - Nikolai Gogol
The Velveteen Rabbit - Margery Williams Bianco

That’s disappointing for you, Nike. But it doesn’t matter, it’s just fun to try some challenges. Once you complete one challenge you will probably do others - choose something easy to do first!

Planning: I am still working on a 19th Century Short Story Challenge in another group. Authors I may read more of are Thomas Hardy, Leo Tolstoy, Bret Harte, L.M. Montgomery, and Anton Chekhov.

I just ordered a copy of The Human Comedy: Selected Stories by Honoré de Balzac. I look forward to fresh translations.

Karin Did anyone here actually wear crocheted shorts? I can't even remember them and know for sure that when I was a child I never wore them.

I'm not much of a short story reader and am trying to finally read Olive Kitteridge which is short stories, so will pass this month.

message 21: by [deleted user] (last edited May 26, 2022 08:40AM) (new)

I missed out on the April challenge - just couldn't make it work.

Like Kathleen, short stories aren't really my jam, but...I do read to my pug, so I'm marking myself down for one short story this month that pug and I will share 🐶📖

*neither of us will be wearing short shorts for this challenge 😂

Yes, thankyou but it's so typical me so I'm not surprised! =) This year I actually promised myself that I would only attempt one challenge in one single GoodReads Group .... how did that turn up? Oh, yes - I'm in many more challenges than I've ever been before ... around 20 I believe. =D I can only laugh about it.

message 23: by Tr1sha (new)

Tr1sha | 336 comments I agree, Nike - that is funny! I try to combine some challenges by choosing a book that satisfies at least 2 challenges in different groups. So at least one of my short stories for this group will be by a female author for another group’s challenge.

message 24: by Jazzy (new)

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) | 1053 comments I'm always in too many challenges. I was just taking a look at the newsfeed and bang up came another challenge I had joined - I had forgotten it even existed!

Okay :)! My friends and I never did--no one at my school did. I did have at least one crocheted vest while growing up, though.

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) | 1053 comments I'm not sure where mine came from though, as my mum didn't crochet!

message 30: by Nike (new)

Nike | 265 comments Aha! Instead of not succeeding at all with the challenge this month I have already read a short story! Shall I report it in this thread? I've forgotten where to do it. Anyway I've just read The Hand by Guy de Maupassant. I enjoyed it and wonder who first came up with the idea of this hand since I think it's the third or fourth short story I've read from that time period in which a mystic hand plays an important role. Fascinating.

Cosmic Arcata | 90 comments I am still finishing up my Aesop's Fables for April. I have really enjoyed them and have been reading a few of them more than once!! Think I will keep them handy. I love bees and there is a great one in there about the drones and the honey bees that I have been thinking about most of the day.

So I definitely want to read some short stories. Mine will probably come in the form of a collection.

"The Ghost Hand" by Selma Lagerlöf. I read it in Swedish but I know it's translated into English, maybe you'll find it at Project Gutenberg but perhaps it's in a short story collection.

The second one that I thought of turns out to be about a foot, not a hand =D - and it's The Mummy's Foot and Other Stories by Théophile Gautier.

But I'm sure I've read a third and I can't seem to find it now. I thought it was a story by Edgar Allen Poe but maybe it wasn't.

Eeehh, aha - ok ... now, I'm totally lost actually. What template are you even talking about? =D I'm lost here .... (that's how it goes when I'm involved in to many groups and to many challenges!) I thought I was done registrating this short story but I must have missed something crucial.

And where shall I add it? Is the template the photo of the girls in shorts? Should I leave the computer and go to bed because my brain is not functioning?
