Beth (bbulow) | 2403 comments May's Group Buddy Read is When Twilight Breaks by Sarah Sundin.

Here's the GR summary:

Evelyn Brand is an American foreign correspondent determined to prove her worth in a male-dominated profession and to expose the growing tyranny in Nazi Germany. To do so, she must walk a thin line. If she offends the government, she could be expelled from the country—or worse. If she does not report truthfully, she'll betray the oppressed and fail to wake up the folks back home.

Peter Lang is an American graduate student working on his PhD in German. Disillusioned with the chaos in the world due to the Great Depression, he is impressed with the prosperity and order of German society. But when the brutality of the regime hits close, he discovers a far better way to use his contacts within the Nazi party—to feed information to the shrewd reporter he can't get off his mind.

As the world marches relentlessly toward war, Evelyn and Peter are on a collision course with destiny.

Beth (bbulow) | 2403 comments I plan on reading this one next! I needed to take a breather from historical and read a contemporary. This will only be my second Sundin novel - I know, I know, I'm super behind on her books. :D

Missy | 935 comments I’ll join, may be the end of the month. CL only has the audio book and it has a 30 day wait. So will get and listen then. Something to look forward to.

Katrina Lybbert | 886 comments I'm planning to join in!

Loraine (librarydiva) | 4436 comments Another super World War 2 read from Sarah Sundin.

Sharon Loves to Read I will be reading along with you. I am new to this... is there a time period in which to read it?

Sharon, the discussions for the main read, as well as the buddy read start on the 15th of each month, so as long as you've finished each by then (or choose to avoid the threads until you're done to avoid spoilers!), you should be good to go!

Sharon Loves to Read Thanks!

Beth (bbulow) | 2403 comments Thank you, Kate! For some reason the thread notifications aren’t popping up for this!

General questions for the group:
What other Sundin novels have you read and which one(s) has been your favorite?

I've read several of her books, and they're all SOOO good. The first one I read by Sarah Sundin was With Every Letter With Every Letter (Wings of the Nightingale, #1) by Sarah Sundin , and it made me cry happy tears. I've been hooked on her ever since (though there are still a few books of hers that I need to go back and read)!

Katrina Lybbert | 886 comments I have only read The Sea Before Us (Sunrise at Normandy, #1) by Sarah Sundin The Sea Before Us. I read it in 2019 and gave it 3 stars. I did like it, but I guess it didn't wow me. It could just have been what was going on in my life at the time, so I may re-read it in the future and give it a second chance.

But so far I am loving When Twilight Breaks!

Sharon Loves to Read When Twilight Breaks is my first. I really enjoyed it.

Simone (simonec75) | 314 comments I read this in November after receiving an ARC from the publisher. I loved it soooo much. Here is my GR review: When Twilight Breaks

Sharon Loves to Read Yes, I thought it was a great read, as well. I wrote a goodreads review, but have no idea how to post it. :) I loved the 2 main characters and their development. I also appreciated how they grappled with the issue of lying in order to preserve safety and/or life.

Beth (bbulow) | 2403 comments I'm still reading - I didn't get to read much of it this weekend and am behind on my professional development, so I'm having to read some for work. However, definitely liking this one more than the first one I read by her, which was Through Waters Deep (Waves of Freedom, #1) by Sarah Sundin . It didn't blow me away, but I did enjoy it.

I just realized I've had this one on kindle for a while. Glad to hear you liked it! It will be the one of hers I try next.

Beth (bbulow) | 2403 comments P.S. - if anyone feels like posting spoiler comments, feel free! I'll still monitor the thread, but will try to get a little further before I come back all the way. :D

This was my first one as well!

Katrina Lybbert | 886 comments I finished this book today! It was amazing! I really enjoyed getting to know Peter and Evelyn through the story. I found it very suspenseful once she had her passport switched to the German passport, never knowing if she would make it out of Germany. It would be really scary not to be able to prove your own identity. It was an adventure!

Beth (bbulow) | 2403 comments I finally was able to finish the book earlier this week! The beginning was a bit slower for me, but like you, Katrina, I found the story to ramp up when the switch was made to her passport.

The overall ominous feeling kept increasing, too, which kept me reading. The romance was tender as well. It ended up being a much more exciting story than I anticipated. The last half flew by for me because I just wanted to know what was going to happen - definitely a sign of a great read.
