Booknblues | 12044 comments Fill in the blank , I should read more __________.
What genre, author, type of book do you think you should read more of?
Why don’t you?

Meli (melihooker) | 4165 comments I am in 4 book clubs that are wildly different in types of books we read so I feel like I am reading across all genres and authorship.

In general, I should just read more! 😂

Even if I wasn't reading diversely I don't think I'd feel too much pressure to read anything specific because I like to read for enjoyment. If there was a genre, author or type I wasn't reading because it doesn't give me joy then I am OK with that.

Theresa | 15492 comments Actually, I created a short list of 3 different genres of books -- and specific books in my TBR for that list -- at the beginning of the year that I wanted to try to weave into my reading this year. I have quite a few books in these genres that I have acquired and added to the TBR but as happens, they mature there for quite some time before I pull myself away from challenges and my go-to genres.

They are:

Classics - Includes reading Dickens which I haven't done in a few years. One book on that list was the Lydia Davis translation of Madame Bovary which I have now read, and Ulysses which I am currently reading.

Non-Fiction - I am lucky to manage one or two a year. Just not my preference when I want to settle down with a book. Yet I have all sorts of non-fiction in the TBR that I do want to read. So far: The British Are Coming: The War for America, Lexington to Princeton, 1775-1777 is among my current buddy reads and I'm creeping along - enjoying for sure. It isn't that I dislike non-fiction -- it's just that I want escape what feels like 'education', 'learning', when I read. Let's face it: I basically read non-fiction all day in my profession as a lawyer.

biography/autobiography/memoir - again not a genre I read more than 1 or 2 here and there. I think it's the same issues as with non-fiction. However, I have quite a few lurking in my TBR. So far I've read Becoming. List includes The Iron Lady: Margaret Thatcher, from Grocer's Daughter to Prime Minister and 2 of Hillary Clinton's books -- probably most likely to read this year the one about her time as Secretary of State.

Aside from my little personal 2022 extra effort, Popsugar Reading Challenges really provide me with diversity already have and continue to push the diversity of my reading. I've worked through a number of biographies/memoirs/authobiographies as a result and a very few non-fiction from my TBR Towers.

Theresa | 15492 comments Just want to add that another memoir on the list was Lab Girl which I read earlier this year. I also have Act One by Moss Hart on the list.

I am pretty much in agreement with Meli!

Way back in library school (20+ years ago!), I thought I should read more "literary" stuff, but in my wide range of reading now I feel like I read enough of it and it's usually not my favourite, anyway.

Patricia Mae (patriciaflair) | 369 comments I should read more middle-grade books, young-adult books and I think adult books. Most of them I read middle-grad books and young-adult books. Author, I think Rebecca Stead, Jacqueline Davies, Alan Gratz, Coco Simon and Rick Riordan. I think type of book do I think I should read more of is Chick lit, Historical fiction, History, Humor & Comedy, Science fiction, Thriller, Self Help, Travel, literature, family, book club books, and classics. I am in 5 book clubs. At one of my book club, I joined challenges. At the other clubs, I joined buddy reads, tags, Young adult books, and BOTM.

KateNZ | 4097 comments I should read more Māori authors - I’m trying to learn the language, and reading novels would let me make broader cultural connections.

They just never quite seem to make it to the top of the TBR pile - I think it’s because I’d really have to focus and I’m tending to read much lighter books at the moment

Heather Reads Books (gothicgunslinger) | 859 comments Last year I said, "I need to read more fantasy fiction that I actually like" (I've tried popular fantasy authors in the past that I've bounced off of), and deliberately tried to put more fantasy on my Trim list, so I feel like I am expanding my horizons a bit!

I still think I need to read more historical fiction and history non-fiction. The luck of the draw and lack of time have brought me to fantasy more so than the others.

And then sometimes I'm just like "I want to ditch all this and read a random thriller now." Priorities 😂

Amy | 12900 comments I don't relate to this question in the least - lol! Which means its kind of crazy that I am responding to it. I don't always respond to these unless I feel I have something to say or add. First of all I am a reading enough. No one in my life would say I should read more, and I daresay some people like my mother, might even say I should read less. "Imagine the time you would have if you weren't busy writing reviews."

I am actually quite proud of and invested in the complicated system on my phone, of what to read next, and how things move up and down the various levels of my TBR. What gets added next, what ultimately gets picked. My TBR has some high priority reads of things I really want to get to. It has some non-fiction, it has some history/politics, it has a lot of magic, and a lot of Tudor. It has some spirituality and psychology. Some mystery thrillers, some hot books coming out, and a lot of my favorite authors. I feel like my reading becomes naturally diverse. But you would never see me be the one to say, "I should read more of this.... or that...." My list curation is a huge feature of my consciousness, and I am balancing over 500 books on my elaborate phone system. A few of you may remember that I "lost" it for like a day, which was oddly "going to be okay", although I did feel a little disoriented. My mind was already whirring possibilities about how the new list based off my memory would truly be the best gauge of what was next to read, and of my true wishlist. Anyway, I think I responded to the question, simply because I thought it was funny and un-relatable in my circumstance. I often hear people remark "I should read more...." and honestly I am always bewildered and roll my eyes and cackle a little. Because its just not my personality. In fact, PBT is perfect for me, because that is the fun for me. The tag or the challenge arrives and it is the opportunity/excuse to read something I totally wouldn't and bizarely landed on my TBR. So I get to pick something out that I wouldn't have and am delighted! There is always room for the high priority hot book reads. It's that part, that I really love.

Robin P | 5725 comments When I was younger, I made an effort to read more books by women because in school the overwhelming majority were by men. At various times, I got more interested in fantasy, historical romance, mystery, sci-fi, nonfiction on psychology, education, the brain, etc.

But now I would say there is no genre or type of book I need to read more of. I read A LOT (over 150 books the last couple years) and with quite a bit of variety. I tried the Book Riot Read Harder challenge one year and found myself reading things I really didn't enjoy. Life is too short. The one thing I should read more of is "books I own". I think I have about 500 on paper, ebook or audiobook and I have already culled out some I know I don't care about. But great new ones keep coming out!

message 11: by Joy D (new)

Joy D | 10059 comments I do not know about "should" (because I read more now than ever before), but I want to read more authors in translation. I like reading about different cultures and life in countries outside of my own.

message 12: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12562 comments I have to agree with Amy on this-my reading is varied (usually) and when I don't find myself in slump (like now) I read more than enough. I don't find the need to "want" to read a certain author or genre-I read what I like, when it suits me

Booknblues | 12044 comments I read many classics in high school and had long thought that I needed to get back and fill in some of the blanks I had missed or reread ones, I might not have fully understood, but recently upon beginning to read several of them, I realized I just didn't enjoy reading.

My reading is after all for my enjoyment, so I have dropped that.

But looking at what I enjoy reading, I have a few areas which I am lagging in this year. I haven't read much historical fiction later than the 20th century, I haven't read any travelogues, and I have a list of books I would like to read this year and I have only read a few.

That being said, I have had a pretty positive reading year. I have been reading some for different awards and prizes and this has taken up some of my reading time, so I think I will be back on track for the rest of the year.

I am glad to see that most everyone is satisfied with their reading.
