Huck Flynn | 380 comments I nearly always watch this - guilty pleasure, good entertainment even if the music is mostly awful. The political voting is a sickener but i see that this year's favourites are Ukraine. I suspect this isn't purely a reflection of the musical content of their entry. Does the show have a future if it gets hijacked for propaganda and politics ?

TheFoe | 2637 comments Perhaps. Rightly or wrongly Ukraine are this years favourites, and could well win with people voting out of solidarity rather than rating their song. That said even if that's the case.I doubt this would happen year in year out especially if this conflict were to end soon. We've had other wars in recent years and I can't remember them influencing a Eurovision contest. Could be wrong though.

Craig White | 6727 comments if the Ukraine entered a piece consisting a series of reverberated farts in biscuit tins it would win! there is no other result! the whole show is tainted with corruption and driven by political opinion, when was it last all about the song? the rest of Europe hates the Engl.....sorry, British, so the strange neo-hippy chap will finish near the bottom with slightly more than nil points!
but, yeah, it is fair entertainment, but probably not for the right reasons!

message 4: by Huck (new)

Huck Flynn | 380 comments I can understand the sentiment of a Ukraine win but that could only come about by some sort of collusion surely. there are fairer and more effective ways to support them without making the "contest" even less relevant. Eg each of the contestants could wear a Ukraine flag (voluntarily of course :-). Actually i like the idea of the reverberated farts in a biscuit tin Tech - maybe UK should have gone with that?

Craig White | 6727 comments .....sound better than ed sheeran at any rate!

i'm looking forward to Scotland's world cup qualifier with Ukraine - a match that practically the rest of the (non-Russian) world will want Ukraine to win! if we (Scotland) win then we will be all the bad bastards of the day.....and if we lose we pass the big bastard baton on to the Welsh! innaresting situation!

Ireland have been on the slide since Johnny Logan !

Helen The Melon | 3419 comments There is some Eurovision stuff on TV tonight:-

8-9pm Channel 5 - "Eurovision: Secrets and Scandals. New documentary uncovering what goes on behind the scenes, revealing stories of political chicanery, fake participants and voting scandals. With contributions from former participants."

9-10 pm BBC4 - "TOTP2 Goes Eurovision. A selection of archive hits from the contest."

10-11.30pm BBC4 - "Eurovision at 60. Behind-the-scenes story of the annual music event". (A repeat, obvs.)

11.30pm-12.30am BBC4 - " Dana: The Original Derry Girl". (Also a repeat, I think.)

Saw that - the top one looks interesting.

Helen The Melon | 3419 comments Yes, sounds like it could be a laugh. I might even watch it, if I can be bothered, and I am no fan of Eurovision.

The irony for years was that it was so expensive to host that some countries tried to lose it. Interesting to think that other countries have their own pop charts (in fact arrogant to think otherwise) and perhaps then why there is less crossover - eg into the UK charts?

theDuke | 6491 comments Just switched on to the show, and do my eyes deceive me, but the UK seem to be winning?!

message 13: by Collette (new)

Collette | 6186 comments God Bless Ukraine! As for us, 2nd place ain't that bad.

message 14: by theDuke (last edited May 14, 2022 04:09PM) (new)

theDuke | 6491 comments 2nd place.....20 years plus since the UK achieved such dizzy heights. No surprise that the public votes were so high for the winners, but well done Ukraine, even if it does feel like they won it on political merits rather than the song, which was dreadful anyway! But hey, call me cynical!

message 15: by Post Soviet (new)

Post Soviet (postsoviet) | 551 comments Surely it was politics (1st place I mean), so congrats UK! And Spain was eye feast.

message 16: by Tim (new)

Tim Franklin | 10949 comments Didn't watch, but if UK came second it might be as political as Ukraine winning, due to the government's leading role in support for Ukraine.

message 17: by Huck (last edited May 15, 2022 04:41AM) (new)

Huck Flynn | 380 comments Maybe we're all getting terribly cynical. I actually liked the Ukraine entry - it was 3rd in my list. Could Europe be trying to coax UK back into EU with a 2nd Place vote - i mean France gave UK 12 points !! Shame about the Spanish song :-)

Blastronaut | 1061 comments Only caught it for about twenty mins but was lucky enough to see that Spanish entry. Whoooooah there Bessy!!!! Gotta say I was highly entertained. S'far as the public goes, I wonder what percentage of the Spanish vote was male? : )

message 19: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22140 comments I looked at the list of Eurovision winners

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...

and the last one I could hum (without going to Youtube for a memory refresh) was 1981 and Bucks Fizz. I don't know if that says more about me or Eurovision. "My Lovely Horse" is more memorable than most Eurovision winners.

message 20: by Huck (new)

Huck Flynn | 380 comments Not sure i'd make humalongable the only criterion for judging music (if Bucks Fizz qualifies) but i know what you mean.
Nice to see Norway giving the contest the gravitas it deserves with their song "Give That Wolf a Banana". Memorable for its name anyway, if nothing else.
