Our thoughts:

To start this off: I have never read Caraval. I know that this book takes place within the same universe and I assume there are many references. That being said, I don't feel like I'm missing anything by not having read it prior to starting Once Upon a Broken Heart.

Once Upon a Broken Heart starts off one of my favorite ways: the magic speaking for itself. I love when you start a book and right off the bat, you know the world is going to be fantastical. It's my favorite type of world building. This book also contains some of my favorite fantasy/romance tropes: the morally grey lead and the possibility of enemies to lovers. From the beginning it is clear that there is more to both Evangeline and Jacks than meets the eye. Jacks obviously has something very big to gain from his partnership with Evangeline and with every kiss, we seem to be that much closer to finding out. The more we learn about Evangeline, the more we suspect that her parents were not all they seem.

Overall, I enjoyed reading Once Upon a Broken Heart and can't wait until the sequel comes out later this year.
