20.8 - Nickels & Dimes - Lucy Bookworm's Task: Flying the Flag

At the time of writing this, the UK is in the middle of a long weekend celebrating The Queen's Platinum Jubilee. Choose one of the following options. REQUIRED: For either option, include the cover in your post.

1) Everywhere seems to be covered in bunting/flags. Read a book with a flag or bunting on the cover (bunting is strings of small, usually triangular, flags). The flag doesn't have to be a national flag but must be recognisable as a flag. A piece of clothing or similar with the representation of a flag will NOT count. It must clearly be a flag or bunting, flying or being waved.

Examples: It Is Well by James D. Shipman The Praetorians by Jean Lartéguy Starting Over (The Little Shop of Hidden Treasures #1) by Holly Hepburn Victory Bells For The Harpers Girls (Welcome To Harpers Emporium #6) by Rosie Clarke The Resistance Girl by Mandy Robotham

2) This weekend has been about people coming together, as families, friends or communities. Read a book with at least 3 people on the cover
Examples: A New Start for the Wrens by Vicki Beeby Kane and Abel (Kane and Abel, #1) by Jeffrey Archer

In addition to the examples above, these work:
Option 1:
Bunting: Double Shot Death (A Ground Rules Mystery #2) by Emmeline Duncan , Summer at the Little French Cafe by Karen Clarke

Option 2: People
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood by Quentin Tarantino , Take My Hand by Dolen Perkins-Valdez
Silhouettes
As long as silhouettes are definitely people, not just blobs, then they will count:
My Wife is Missing by D.J. Palmer , The Island by Adrian McKinty

There do NOT work:
Wide Awake by David Levithan - this might resemble the USA flag but it is not a flag!
Bertie the Blitz Dog by Libby Parker - it is obvious that this is meant to be the Union Jack, but it is not a flying flag
Sea of Thunder Four Commanders and the Last Great Naval Campaign 1941-1945 by Evan Thomas again, the US flag is not an actual flag flying, just a representation of it ...

My feeling is that as long as the silhouettes are definitely people, not just blobs, then they will count.
So yes, I will approve this one.

The challenge says "Read a book with at least 3 people on the cover" & I see three people on that cover!

AWESOME! I'm so excited. A library patron recommended it this week when she checked it in, and I read the first page and was HOOKED. It'll be a while before it gets back around to me - it's getting a lot of play in the queue hold here - but I'll have it before I "need it."

Thanks so much for seeing it the same way I did. ;-D

Yes, there is clearly bunting flying on that van!

Robin P | 1609 comments This may sound pedantic, and I'm actually using Option 1 myself, but I always thought of bunting (option 2) as something else, and looking it up online, I am finding what I had in mind as well as what you mentioned about flags (maybe US vs British?)

From Wikipedia - Typical forms of bunting are strings of colorful, monochrome, beige triangular flags and lengths of fabric in the colors of national flags gathered and draped into swags or pleated into fan shapes

for example - \\https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:20...

I can't immediately think of a book cover with this but just wanted to mention it. Maybe not relevant because your primary reference is to flags and you defined your meaning of bunting in a clear way.

Bunting in the UK is usually triangular pennants, though can be other shapes (eg rectangle, particularly for mini flags, or pennants)
For the avoidance of doubt, these images show bunting "flying" as intended ...

I thought of bunting as this too: https://th.bing.com/th/id/R.857bcffc0...

I have never thought of it as the triangles. Thanks to all for pointing out the difference.

Good point, the other kind doesn't "fly", it just hangs there!

I think this should work for both options if silhouettes are okay: I think it's pretty clear that they're horsemen with flags. But I just wanted to confirm that you agree.

Unfortunately I don't see any flags flying on that cover - it is obviously meant to represent the US flag, but is not actually a flag flying.

I am not an expert on zombies in terms of whether they class as people, but those images look like people to me, so I'll say yes!

Andy, I'm so sorry for the delay in replying, I've had no internet access over the weekend. I am going to say that you can most definitely tell that they are people & with 90% of the body showing, I will say yes for 3 people on that cover!

Would this work for Option 2?
