Lovelace who was the AI installed on the Wayfarer is forced to reboot before she can live a second life in a synthetic human body. Her reboot comes awake in the new body which she calls her kit and just feels wrong. She has no memories from before and seems to hate pretending to be a human. Calling herself Sidra as one of her first attempts at acclimation, she is helped through the process of adapting by Pepper and Blue who have "adopted" her into their home and her first friend Tak. The story is told in alternating voices between Sidra and Pepper. Sidra shares the now and her discomfort of being in the wrong body and learning to be human. Pepper shares flashback's of her own childhood. She was made in a factory but escaped and was saved and raised by another AI named Owl. Both stories share similarities of self discovery and creating their own identity, learning to fit into a great world and the relationships between humans and AIs. Can an AI be human? or behave and feel with real human emotions and connections? Are the relationships not real if one is not human?

This is a lovely story about identity and how people/AI/aliens treat each other. It was a bit slow in the way of self discovery and a bit heartbreaking at times but I really enjoyed as the relationships blossomed.
