We are heading into summer in the Northern Hemisphere, and for many of us it means ice cream time! So much so, that in the US we have designated July as National Ice Cream month and within the month there are two National Ice Cream Days with July 1st being devoted to ice cream flavors.

The world of flavors has exploded over the last couple decades. You can make ice cream out of anything from mayonnaise to chorizo! Let’s take a look at just a few interesting international flavors that can be found of this popular frozen treat.

1. Seafood Ice Cream
You can find variants of this all over the world. Japan is featuring eel, oyster and shrimp ice cream in many of their ice cream stores. Lobster ice cream in a must in the US state of Maine with it being the lobster capital of the country. And an ice cream manufacturer in the UK has taken this idea very seriously and is producing Fish and Chips flavored ice cream. This cod based treat comes with potato ice cream chips served with salt and vinegar seasoning and lemon wedges to make the experience complete.

2. Akutuq Ice Cream
The Indigenous peoples of Alaska have a twist on the seafood idea. They combine dried fish with caribou meat, seal oil, and a variety of berries to make this favorite ice cream. They call it “akutaq” which means “to stir,” since it is traditionally made by hand mixing the ingredients together in ice. Sugar is also added to the mix, transforming it from a hunter’s staple meal into a hearty dessert. Akutaq is served all over Alaska, with hundreds of different variations, each one personal to the chef and their family.

3. Brown Bread Ice Cream
Brown bread is a staple of the Irish diet, so why not make ice cream out of it when the bread goes stale. The dry crumbs can be caramelized with muscovado sugar and used
for Ireland’s favorite ice cream. Brown bread ice cream is ubiquitous in restaurants and cafes across the country. The crunchy breadcrumbs add a pleasant texture to the vanilla ice cream base, and Irish whiskey can be added as an optional ingredient to stop the ice cream from freezing too hard. (And, of course, for the taste.)

4. Whiskey Prune Ice Cream
Speaking of whiskey, let’s head down south to Australia to see what they do with whiskey … and prunes! A popular ice cream store in Simmo Beach uses a "secret Irish recipe" that mixes mascarpone ice cream with whiskey-soaked prunes. They then add swirls of a whiskey ripple to really get that boozy flavor. I’ll take one of those!

5. Durian Ice Cream
Durian fruit is famous throughout Southeast Asia for its spiky skin and distinctive, powerful smell, a scent that's been compared to everything from raw sewage to rotten onions. The taste, however, is quite different. The smell gives way to a unique sweetness and creamy texture that melts in your mouth, which makes it the perfect ingredient for this much loved ice cream. Throughout Southeast Asia you can find Durian ice pops and ice cream at street vendors, ice cream parlors, and you can even pick up a tub of it at the supermarket. In the Philippines it is often made with real crocodile eggs which certainly makes it even more unusual.

6. Lucuma Ice Cream
High up in the Andes there is another interesting fruit that looks like a cross between a mango, a turnip, and an avocado: the lucuma. Its plain appearance is deceiving, though, for lucuma is known as “gold of the Incas”. It’s little wonder why, as the fruit has a heavenly taste resembling candied yam. The prized fruit is also responsible for Peru’s favorite ice cream flavor. It is sold to tourists along the Inca Trail and to late-night revelers in the streets of Lima. Lucuma ice cream makes an impressive dessert when served with pecans, a wafer straw, and chocolate sauce made with Peruvian cocoa or dulce de leche.

7. Basil Gelato
Let me say up front (so our Italian member doesn’t shake her head), gelato is NOT ice cream – it’s better than ice cream!! Italy has certainly perfected their frozen treat so it’s no surprise that there are literally hundreds of flavors to choose from. One of the more common flavors that might seem strange to American taste buds is basil gelato. Basil is typically seen as a savory herb, but its fresh aroma, vibrant green color, and mild taste work equally well in sweet products. Basil gelato can be enjoyed as a standalone flavor
or combined with lemon, strawberry, and even olive oil for a refreshing dessert.

8. Foie Gras Ice Cream
Even though the production of foie gras is a little controversial (it’s actually been banned in a couple states of the US), it apparently is popular with high-end ice cream makers around the world. According to French law, where it was first produced and is considered a delicacy, foie gras is defined as the liver of a duck or goose fattened by gavage or force feeding. France was the most likely place this over-the-top indulgence was first created, but it can be found in many ice cream stores throughout the world
and is especially popular in Hong Kong.

You can find variants of this all over the world. Japan is featuring eel, oyster and shrimp ice cream in many of their ice cream stores. Lobster ice cream in a must in the US state of Maine with it being the lobster capital of the country. And an ice cream manufacturer in the UK has taken this idea very seriously and is producing Fish and Chips flavored ice cream. This cod based treat comes with potato ice cream chips served with salt and vinegar seasoning and lemon wedges to make the experience complete.

The Indigenous peoples of Alaska have a twist on the seafood idea. They combine dried fish with caribou meat, seal oil, and a variety of berries to make this favorite ice cream. They call it “akutaq” which means “to stir,” since it is traditionally made by hand mixing the ingredients together in ice. Sugar is also added to the mix, transforming it from a hunter’s staple meal into a hearty dessert. Akutaq is served all over Alaska, with hundreds of different variations, each one personal to the chef and their family.

for Ireland’s favorite ice cream. Brown bread ice cream is ubiquitous in restaurants and cafes across the country. The crunchy breadcrumbs add a pleasant texture to the vanilla ice cream base, and Irish whiskey can be added as an optional ingredient to stop the ice cream from freezing too hard. A popular ice cream store in Simmo Beach uses a "secret Irish recipe" that mixes mascarpone ice cream with whiskey-soaked prunes. They then add swirls of a whiskey ripple to really get that boozy flavor. I’ll take one of those!

Durian fruit is famous throughout Southeast Asia for its spiky skin and distinctive, powerful smell, a scent that's been compared to everything from raw sewage to rotten onions. The taste, however, is quite different. The smell gives way to a unique sweetness and creamy texture that melts in your mouth, which makes it the perfect ingredient for this much loved ice cream. Throughout Southeast Asia you can find Durian ice pops and ice cream at street vendors, ice cream parlors, and you can even pick up a tub of it at the supermarket. High up in the Andes there is another interesting fruit that looks like a cross between a mango, a turnip, and an avocado: the lucuma. Its plain appearance is deceiving, though, for lucuma is known as “gold of the Incas”. It’s little wonder why, as the fruit has a heavenly taste resembling candied yam. The prized fruit is also responsible for Peru’s favorite ice cream flavor. It is sold to tourists along the Inca Trail and to late-night revelers in the streets of Lima.
