I slogged on this one, not fault of Abercrombie's, just the slump I had been in forever and nothing I picked up was making me want to read.
Did I like Shivers and Monza? I did. But, not as much as Ninefingers and the gang. "You have to be realistic about these things" 😂.
Great quote: When God needs to punish a man, he sends him stupid friends. Keeping this one on my desk as a reminder that sometimes the elevator does not go all to the top for some folks.
Our new pal Friendly-rates up there with Superior Glokta for me.
Of course Abercrombie's writing was top-notch. He can go from humor to prose that puts you right in the moment:
Visserine by night had become a place of flame and shadow. An endless maze of broken walls, fallen roofs, jutting rafters. A nightmare of of disembodied cries, ghostly shapes flitting through darklness...
Loved how Abercrombie kept you guessing the entire book, as everyone at one time or another (exception Monza) switched sides.

The ending was perfection.
