Hi Everyone!

Welcome to our June 2022 BOM thread. We will be discussing Jordan Castillo Price's Zero Hour, one of the novels she wrote for her newsletter years ago with the help of the recipients voting on what should happen in the each installment.

Feel free to start discussing this book whenever you would like, just be aware there will be spoilers in this thread!

Yay!

This dates back to the time before I had a Kindle and still bought my MM in print! Got to pull it off the shelf and admire the original cover design. 😁

Trio | 670 comments I think it is literally the only JCP book I haven't read.
It is loaded up on my Kindle, and ready to go!

Started reading this. I forget this was illustrated!

Also, as someone who doesn’t drink coffee, I wonder if I’d appreciate it/consume it if I didn’t have to taste or smell it. Lol. On that note, I’m falling asleep. Time for bed.

This is a long start, where I'm not quite into it yet.

Trio | 670 comments I fizzled after the first chapter, but I'm going to pick it up again!

I don't remember much about my first reading of this to know if I read it any faster, but I'm kind of struggling with it for sure. I'm not even at chapter ten yet, but am determined to finish it by the weekend or by the end of the weekend. I hope.

The beginning was hard to get into for me this time. But now I’m past the halfway point and sucked in! I had a bunch of questions, like how are babies born here, but that’s now been answered. I assume the others will be too, though I’ve forgotten them for the moment, so who knows.

What I would like to say, is that while this story is creepy, with slight 1984 (George Orwell) vibes and other bad vibes, as someone with ADHD who finds foods, cooking, eating, and the cleanup, nothing but a chore I’d rather not need to do, I like the idea of the shunts, even though they’re scary as hell. Lol. Imagine how much reading and writing and other fun things I could accomplish if I didn’t have to stop to cook, eat, and clean up? Lol.

Also, not just ADHD, but digestive issues too. Not having digestive issues would be great!

Just finished it and here’s my quick review: So interesting. The first time I read this years ago I gave it five stars and listed it as a favorite. I wasn’t reviewing books back then so I don’t know anything else about my thoughts on it. My second read, years later, I seem to be having a very different experience. It’s good, but I wasn’t gripped by it. I’d forgotten pretty much everything so it was like reading it for the first time. I wanted more world building and maybe Ernest meets Will earlier somehow so they have more time to get comfortable and fall in love. I’m not sure. But, sadly, it’s off my favorites list. Ah well. Psycop will always be JCP’s #1 series/characters. Lol.

Averin | 113 comments Just read this, it is on Libby at the library. I too,was disappointed the relationship wasn’t more developed, more effort put into world-building. Still an amazing, yet scary idea.

This one was written through JCP’s newsletter before I was a fan. She would ask what should happen next after each installment and maybe that’s why it feels shallower than her other work. I think it was the first of the three she wrote that way.
