Sebastian meets with lots of Sophie’s acquaintances who professed to want to help but he would later find they’d been less than forthcoming or even lied to him. Was that more about not trusting Sebastian, deliberate subterfuge, fear based on the precarious political climate or some combination? Who were you mistrusting from the outset and why? Who did you feel you could trust? Who surprised you the most?

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 242 comments Good question. I need to go back to the book and check out my highlights.

Charlene (charlenethestickler) | 1392 comments I'm sorry -- I read the book too far back to reach those memories.

Anita (anitanodiva) | 849 comments I think it was a combination of all three depending on who was talking to Sebastian and what their agenda was. I mistrusted Count who was into roses, Niccolò Aravena. I didn't like him at all. I felt the only trustworthy people were Sophie's housekeeper, Geneviéve Dion, and Émile Landrieu, the man who kept the museum. Fanny Carpenter surprised me the most, I never would have pegged her as the villain.
