Some of the sections of this book are so beautifully written, they should be savored, pondered. and lingered upon. I read this at the beginning of a hectic readathon, which might have been a mistake.
This is excellent as an historical fiction book about the war in Cyprus between Greece and Turkey. It's also a romance between a Greek man and a Turkish woman who were separated by the war, and reunited years later, and about their child. The story is told through alternating perspectives. Some sections are written from the perspective of a fig tree that has observed the events in the book. Sometimes the fig tree's sections moved the narrative forward, because it had access to information that the others didn't have. But sometimes it took on a dreamy, philosophical quality that shifted the tone and tempo of the book too much. If I were reading at a more leisurely pace (outside with a gentle breeze) that wouldn't have bothered me.
Now that I'm taking a few more moments to think about the book (rather than race to finish something else), I think I could be more generous in my rating. I might take some time later to revisit it.
