Taylor Greer grew up in Kentucky Where it is a great accomplishment to graduate from high school without getting pregnant. After graduation she decides she would be happier living somewhere else, so she takes off in her barely drivable VW bug. Stopping at a diner in Oklahoma a total stranger gives her a toddler and tells her to take care of the child. Taylor and the child she calls Turtle make it as far as Arizona where she has two flat tires right next to Jesus is Lord Tires. Taylor decides that Arizona is a good place to settle down, There Taylor and Turtle become "family" along with the friends they make.
I read this book because it was the one available book by Kingsolver at my library. I went into this wondering if I would enjoy it. Who gives a complete stranger a child? A very young woman in a failing car at that? The more I read it the more I liked it, The book deals with some difficult subjects poverty, immigration and, domestic violence to name a few. I didn't realize there was another book about the Greer's when I started this one I will definitely be reading it at some point. I loved the characters of Taylor and Turtle and look forward to their further adventures.
