If you're interested, feel free to answer these questions and let us know what you loved and didn't love about the challenge!

- 5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge
- My most creative twist on a prompt
- The prompt I cheated on
- My favorite prompt
- My least favorite prompt
- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!)
- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!)

message 2: by °~Amy~° (new)

°~Amy~° (amybooksit) I finished the challenge on June 7th

- 5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge
The Fellowship of the Ring (The Lord of the Rings, #1) by J.R.R. Tolkien Hello, Universe by Erin Entrada Kelly A Master of Djinn (Dead Djinn Universe, #1) by P. Djèlí Clark Fugitive Telemetry (The Murderbot Diaries, #6) by Martha Wells The One by John Marrs Stars and Bones (Stars and Bones, #1) by Gareth L. Powell Velocity Weapon (The Protectorate, #1) by Megan E. O'Keefe Chaos Vector (The Protectorate, #2) by Megan E. O'Keefe The Egg and Other Stories by Andy Weir Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson Punching the Air by Ibi Zoboi Winnie's Great War by Lindsay Mattick The Girl and the Ghost by Hanna Alkaf My Sweet Orange Tree by José Mauro de Vasconcelos The Sins of Our Fathers (The Expanse, #9.5) by James S.A. Corey As the Last I May Know by S.L. Huang Dungeon Crawler Carl (Dungeon Crawler Carl #1) by Matt Dinniman My Monticello by Jocelyn Nicole Johnson

- My most creative twist on a prompt - Maybe using FUgitive Telemetry for Tarot, there is death and there is some justice in the book so I went with it!

- The prompt I cheated on - I always feel like the "prompt that didn't make it" is a cheat. I just put in any book that I read that doesn't fit anywhere else and then go find a prompt to fit it

- My favorite prompt - A book set on or near a body of water, books set at sea are a favorite trope of mine

- My least favorite prompt - Other than 'prompt that didn't make it" I struggled with 'handwriting on the cover' just because I had a hard time deciding what was considered handwriting and what was a fancy font. That's a perception issue and not a real issue with the prompt itself though.

- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!) - Winnie's Great War it was really interesting to read some of the real history of Winnie the Pooh

- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!) - Proposal So many choices for 'a book released in 2022' and I chose this one. Why? Terrible, terrible idea.

- 5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge

4. fits your favorite prompt that did not make the list (A book with a theme of exploration)
Madhouse at the End of the Earth: The Belgica's Journey into the Dark Antarctic Night - 5* - My Review

19. involves alternate reality, alternate worlds, or alternate history
The Sparrow - 5* - My Review

36. 2 books related to flora and fauna - Book 2
Underland: A Deep Time Journey - 5* - My Review

48. posted in one of the ATY Best Book of the Month threads in 2021 or 2022
Project Hail Mary - 5* - My Review

49. connected to the phrase "Here (There) Be Dragons"
The River of Doubt: Theodore Roosevelt's Darkest Journey - 5* - My Review

- My most creative twist on a prompt
41. theme of food or drink
(The entire book is not about food and drink, but it does feature the author eating regularly at cafes and describing what he orders)
A Moveable Feast - 4* - My Review

- The prompt I cheated on
I did not cheat.

- My favorite prompt
4. fits your favorite prompt that did not make the list
(I liked this idea so much that I am probably going to create a short list of favorites that did not make the list and continue this challenge)

- My least favorite prompt
33. The next book in a series
(I do not enjoy reading books in a series and I had very few options for this one)

- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!)
35. 2 books related to flora and fauna - Book 1
A Most Remarkable Creature: The Hidden Life and Epic Journey of the World’s Smartest Birds of Prey - 4* - My Review
(I might have read this eventually but the challenge spurred me to read it now)

- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!)
32. the main character is a female detective/private eye/police officer
The Late Show - 3* - My Review
(I'm not a fan of detective novels in general and this one was just so-so)

message 4: by Samantha (last edited Jun 17, 2022 12:19PM) (new)

Samantha | 1560 comments I think I finished on June 3rd.
- 5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge
The Final Revival of Opal & Nev by Dawnie Walton The Office of Historical Corrections by Danielle Evans The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood Girl Made of Stars by Ashley Herring Blake Recitatif A Story by Toni Morrison All Systems Red (The Murderbot Diaries, #1) by Martha Wells The Brilliant Life of Eudora Honeysett by Annie Lyons
- My most creative twist on a prompt - I don't think I had any that were that creative.
- The prompt I cheated on - Nothing really. I chose Wahala for under 5000 rating it was new so didn't have that many ratings at the time. I knew it would go over and it has so kind of feel like I could have done a better job with that one.
- My favorite prompt - A book related to a game. There were a lot of fun options for this. I saw The Westing Game in the comments for the prompt, I had never heard of it and it was great!
- My least favorite prompt - Probably Flora and Fauna. I had a hard time finding books that fit the "present in a particular region" part of the definition. I gave up on that and just read books that fit the simple definition of plants and animals.
- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!) The Brilliant Life of Eudora Honeysett - it sounded like it would be sad but it really wasn't overall very uplifting.
- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!) - Trashed the drawing were well done but I didn't really enjoy it and it had a animal cruelty situation that wasn't necessary.

Yes, sorry Jillian, I totally meant to do that yesterday when I posted it!

message 7: by Severina (new)

Severina | 395 comments I finished on June 26th! Yay!

5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge:
I had 13 five-star reads this time!

01. The Skull Throne / Peter V Brett
02. City of the Dead / SD Perry
03. Stillhouse Lake / Rachel Caine
04. The Rural Diaries: Love, Livestock, and Big Life Lessons Down on Mischief Farm / Hilarie Burton Morgan
05. Tea with Milk and Murder / HY Hanna
06. The Call / Peadar O'Guilin
07. Two Down, Bun to Go / HY Hanna
08. Till Death Do Us Tart / HY Hanna
09. Dog on It / Spencer Quinn
10. Apocalypse of the Dead / Joe McKinney
11. Thereby Hangs a Tail / Spencer Quinn
12. Educated / Tara Westover
13. The Guncle / Steven Rowley

My most creative twist on a prompt:
I would say "related to glass". The plot involved a sort of magical observatory with a glass dome that appeared and disappeared, and sometimes had glass floors. I think it works.

The prompt I cheated on:
Probably "gothic elements". I found a definition I liked and kind of shoe-horned Wilder Girls by Rory Power into there.

My favorite prompt
I liked "non-human main character."

My least favorite prompt:
Definitely "featuring a woman in STEM". I went through sooooo many lists and google articles and listopias trying to find something that interested me. I finally remembered that I had an old favourite by Barbara Hambly from 1986 that fit the bill.

A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!)
The Minotaur Takes a Cigarette Break / Steven Sherrill. A really unique story with lots of emotion that I never even would have heard of where it not for the challenge.

A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!)
Ring Shout / P Djeli Clark. Such a great premise. Such a muddled, incoherent mess.

Kathy E | 3306 comments I finished on June 30, 2022

5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge
The Small House at Allington by Anthony Trollope Can You Forgive Her? by Anthony Trollope Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont by Elizabeth Taylor The Weight of Ink by Rachel Kadish Upstream Selected Essays by Mary Oliver The Midnight Library by Matt Haig Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo The Eustace Diamonds by Anthony Trollope Firekeeper's Daughter by Angeline Boulley Kitchens of the Great Midwest by J. Ryan Stradal Far From the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy

My most creative twist on a prompt
A book related to a game. I used The Unfinished Clue, relating the word "clue" in the title to the board game, Clue.

The prompt I cheated on
Not really cheating, but I used a 71 page children's book for the prompt A book connected to the phrase Here (There) Be Dragons, The Tea Dragon Society

My favorite prompt
A book from NPR's Book Concierge. I'm doing a mini-challenge using books from this list.

My least favorite prompt
A book related to mythology. I just really don't enjoy myths.

A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!)
I was worried about the alternate reality/worlds prompt but read The Midnight Library and it was so good.

A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!)
Don't have one, so that's good

Finished today, July 11
5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge
Migrations
Search
This is typical for me, I don't give a lot of 5-star ratings

- My most creative twist on a prompt - for loving LGBTQ relationship I used Best Wishes, Warmest Regards: The Story of Schitt's Creek which is about the making of the TV show which prominently features a gay couple

- The prompt I cheated on - none but it was stretching it to use Search for flora just because it had trees and plants on the cover

- My favorite prompt - the Tarot Arcana cards

- My least favorite prompt - surprisingly, nationality or language in the title turned out to be hard to find

- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!) - Migrations - for Earth Day

- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!) - none, thankfully

Monica Hills | 20 comments I finished the challenge on May 7th.

5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge
The Diamond Eye
My most creative twist on a prompt
A Book Related to Earth Day- I read Across the Green Grass Fields- the girl traveled to a land with very little pollution.
The prompt I cheated on
I did not cheat on any.
My favorite prompt
Next book in a series- This gives you lots of options and allows you to read books you love that might not fit other prompts.
My least favorite prompt
A book from the TIME list of 100 Best YA Books of All Time - YA is not my favorite and there were only 100 options. I know this sounds like a lot but I had read many of them and it is not always easy to get books that sound interesing. I don't want to buy books just for the challenge if I might not like them.
A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!)
Midnight at the Blackbird Café
A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!)
Memorial Drive: A Daughter's Memoir

message 11: by ladymurmur (new)

ladymurmur | 541 comments I finished 17-July! If memory serves, this is the earliest that I've finished the challenge yet.

Everything that I read for this year's challenge was already on my TBR (new reads or rereads) or added to my TBR organically. Most prompts were filled after the fact by realizing that something I read satisfied one or another. Only a few did I bump up the list to read because of this challenge.

24 new reads
28 rereads

5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge (new reads)
Iron Widow (Iron Widow, #1) by Xiran Jay Zhao Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao
Turning Darkness Into Light (The Memoirs of Lady Trent, #6) by Marie Brennan Turning Darkness Into Light by Marie Brennan
Scriber by Ben S. Dobson Scriber by Ben S. Dobson

My most creative twist on a prompt
None, really. They were all pretty straightforward choices.

My favorite prompt
The most delightful surprise was realizing the series I'd just finished (Custard Protocol) satisfied the 3 books set on three different continents prompts.

Rose (rosew77) | 67 comments Ahh--finally read that last book--the language prompt. I had 51 completed end of April/beginning of May.

LeahS | 1359 comments Finished today 19 July 2022.

5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge:
Parable of the Talents (Earthseed, #2) by Octavia E. Butler Peterloo Witnesses to a Massacre by Polyp Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi Diary of a Young Naturalist by Dara McAnulty A Swim in a Pond in the Rain In Which Four Russians Give a Master Class on Writing, Reading, and Life by George Saunders The Shadow King by Maaza Mengiste The Island of Missing Trees by Elif Shafak The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman
Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro

- My most creative twist on a prompt:
Using the reject prompt 'book about bees' for Peterloo Witnesses to a Massacre by Polyp as it was set in Manchester, city which uses a bee symbol.

- The prompt I cheated on:
I didn't cheat.

- My favourite prompt:
I liked the 3 continents prompt and the flora and fauna prompt (I just like multi-prompts!)

- My least favourite prompt:
Nothing I really disliked - they were all good prompts this year.

- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!)
I was trying to clear m TBR list, so most of the books were ones I would have read at some point, or ones I liked the look of in the library. Possibly wouldn't have read: A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki

- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t
There was nothing I hated.

message 14: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (melthereader) | 21 comments Completed! 52/52 7/18/2022

- 5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge:
- My most creative twist on a prompt:
- The prompt I cheated on: N/A, unless it's cheating to read Remarkably Bright Creatures for a book about flora and fauna
- My favorite prompt: book related to one of the 22 Tarot Major Arcana cards (lots of interesting possibilities)
- My least favorite prompt: book related to Earth Day or book related to glass
- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!): Mudlark: in Search of London’s Past Along the River Thames (for ATY best Book of the Month threads 2021 or 2022), I would never have known this book existed except for having to research a book for this prompt, and it was so interesting, especially since I'd just learned what mudlarking is from The Last Apothecary
- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!): maybe Tuck Everlasting? It was fine, and short, but I wouldn't have read it this year without that Best YA prompt. I just really haven't been in the mood for most YA.

Ann S | 624 comments Finally finished the challenge on June 23rd. I left the list books until last because, try as I might, I don't like list books.

Fav Book was reading as an adult Brave New World and 1984. They felt so different as an adult and with today's world.

I cheated on prompt 16 Earth Day, because I read three children's books to kids that day and used them.

The book I read for prompt 49...on dragons...was fun after all. My Diary from the Edge of the World

Lindsay Kelly | 286 comments I finished the 52 book challenge last night. This is the first time I've done any reading challenges (since I was a kid) and I really enjoyed it. I've definitely read more this year than I have in the last few years.

I'm also doing the side challenges and I was overlapping with the main challenge, so next year I might try to do the main challenge and the side challenge without overlapping them so it'll take longer to be completed.

- 5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge
Duck Feet by Ely Percy - Academic Setting
What Happened To You?: Conversations on Trauma, Resilience, and Healing by Dr Bruce Perry and Oprah Winfrey - book about psychology
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee - 2021/2022 book of the month threads
A Game of Thrones by George R R Martin - Here there be dragons
A Storm of Swords: Steel and Snow by George R R Martin - Next book in a series
In the Days of Rain: A Daughter, a Father, a Cult by Rebecca Stott - 2 double letters
Inés of My Soul by Isabelle Allende - Latin American Author

- My most creative twist on a prompt
2 books related to flora and fauna I used words in the authors name and title rather than themes of the book or images on the cover
Orange Is the New Black by Piper Kerman
Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan
- The prompt I cheated on
A book with a non-human as one of the main characters I read Beating About the Bush by M C Beaton, where the story is about the antics of a donkey, but he's really the plot rather than a character.
- My favorite prompt
The next book in a series - I have loads of series that I'm midway through. I could probably have done this prompt 52 times, lol
- My least favorite prompt
A book related to the 22 Major Tarot Arcana Cards - I found this too broad a category and I struggled to pick something. I think I picked a book then looked for a category that it fell into (it was judgement).
- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!)
What Happened To You?: Conversations on Trauma, Resilience, and Healing - It's a contender for my book of the year
- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!)
Twas the Nightshift Before Christmas by Adam Kay

5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge:
Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia The Complete Maus by Art Spiegelman Life After Life (Todd Family, #1) by Kate Atkinson

My most creative twist on a prompt:
It’s not super creative, but, for the “three books, three different continents” prompts, I chose to only use books from the Southern Hemisphere. Using books from Europe, North America, and Asia would be far too easy for me.

The prompt I cheated on:
It’s not much of a cheat, per se, but…I had intended to make prompt #22 (Jewish author or character) more challenging for myself by using a book with no mention of Nazis or the Holocaust, as I’ve read a lot of books dealing with those topics over the years. I failed utterly and abandoned the idea a few weeks ago. Of the 52 books I read for the challenge, 9 had Jewish authors and/or characters and the only one that didn’t have any references to Nazis or the Holocaust was written in 1920. I’m not saying there aren’t a lot of books out there that would meet the criteria (I’ve read more than a few), but I didn’t have much luck finding them this year. In the end, I decided to use The Complete Maus, which my sister gave me as a birthday present. It is a masterpiece of Holocaust literature and I would encourage everyone to read it at some point in their lives.

My favorite prompt:
#50. A book that involves aging, or a character in their golden years.

My least favorite prompt:
#15. A book without a person on the cover. It was way too easy

A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!):
Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!):
Daughter of Smoke & Bone by Laini Taylor

Joyce | 600 comments - 5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge - By Night the Mountain Burns Prodigal Summer

- My most creative twist on a prompt - 4. A book that fits your favorite prompt that did not make the list - Rock, Paper Scissors, (Lizard, Spock) - Jim Marshall - The Father of Loud: The Story of the Man Behind the World's Most Famous Guitar Amplifiers for the rock element.

- The prompt I cheated on - I’m used to the library coming up with different covers to the one catalogued but this time it was a different title. So for 52. A book with a time-related word in the title instead of reading The Day Aberystwyth Stood Still I read The Unbearable Lightness Of Being In Aberystwyth. Not a huge cheat as the book is actually the same.

- My favorite prompt - books from 3 different continents

- My least favorite prompt - 19. A book that involves alternate reality, alternate worlds, or alternate history - not least because I had trouble finding something available that fitted to my satisfaction.

- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!) - By Night the Mountain Burns - a memoir of growing up on a small island off Equatorial Guinea. It was like listening to oral history and so well told.

- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!) - The Welsh Girl - I kept thinking that the ending would redeem it as I was bored but it just stopped abruptly.

Kendra | 2083 comments I moved things around, so I either finished on Sept. 8th, or Sept. 12th depending on how you calculate it.

5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge
Lore Olympus: Volume One
Lore Olympus: Volume Two
A Deadly Education
The Last Graduate
Winter's Orbit
The Poet X
Long Way Down
Crowbones
Tales from the Café
Spelunking Through Hell
Soul Taken
Book Lovers
Ruby Fever
Eclipse the Moon
The Old Guard: Tales Through Time, Vol. 1

My most creative twist on a prompt
I don't think I was that creative in my interpretation - but I did read a book for each tarot card and I mixed and matched with how I matched the cards - title, character, cover or theme of the book matched the meaning of the card)

The prompt I cheated on
I just used a book with a dog on the cover (not a Scottish Terrier).

My favorite prompt
40. A book related to each one of the 22 Tarot Major Arcana cards.

Also, weirdly enough, while I was dreading both the NPR list and the top 100 YA list because I don't like list prompts, but I ended up reading (and loving) soooooooooo many books that worked for those prompts.

My least favorite prompt
2 books related to flora & fauna.

A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!) & A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!)
I mostly read first, then match to a prompt. The only ones I had prompts picked for before hand, were books I was already planning to read. But if I wasn't reading it for a prompt, I would have DNF'd Cinder

I don't rate.

- My most creative twist on a prompt
Everything was pretty straightforward for me this year

- The prompt I cheated on
I thought about using There's No Such Thing as Bad Weather: A Scandinavian Mom's Secrets for Raising Healthy, Resilient, and Confident Kids for the inclement weather prompt, but found another place for it.

- My favorite prompt
a book with handwriting on the cover was fun and different
Wolf Hollow by Lauren Wolk

I didn't particularly care for the female detective/PI/police officer one

The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating for book related to fauna

- 5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge
Of the 52 books, I gave 5-stars to 25 of them. Some think I rate to easily. I like to think I read really, really, good books. ;>)
I do, however, have my own "5+" stars, which I gave to
Washington Black
The Sentence
Once There Were Wolves
Becoming (in audio)

My most creative twist on a prompt
#49 - "Here There Be Dragons". First I had to research if what I thought that meant was really what it meant. Then I had to think where I think the dragons are. Read The Hollywood Spy (which I then of course had to further research), regarding the Nazis and the KKK in Hollywood during WW2.

The prompt I cheated on
Maybe? #35. Book related to Flora. Chose The Lost Soul mainly because of the illustrations.

My favorite prompt
#26, 27 - Two books with the same word in the title
A Keeper
The Seed Keeper

My least favorite prompt
#12. A book related to glass. And it was only my least favorite until I found the right book.
Greenglass House

A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!)
I have 5 actually:
The Penelopiad
Once There Were Wolves
Greenglass House
Elizabeth Is Missing
The Westing Game

A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!)
None. The least favorite was actually a pick of my local book club.
Dial A for Aunties

Other Stats for the Challenge
85% female authors
New-to-me authors: 26 (one of the reasons I love this challenge!)

- My most creative twist on a prompt
For "Here there be dragons"- I took it to mean something bad lurking, specifically shame
Daring Greatly: How the Courage to Be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead

- The prompt I cheated on
"Powell Award" I've read tons of them in the past and loved them, but the one I chose Vernon God Little, I hated sooooo much and DNF'd it halfway through after trying to read it for months, and used my first ever Wild Card. No regrets.

- My favorite prompt
2 books with the same word in title

- My least favorite prompt
YA top 100 ( finally read Salt to the Sea which I liked but this is the one I procrastinated a lot.

- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!)
Salt to the Sea

- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!)
Vernon God Little although I didn't finish it.

Hannah Peterson | 700 comments Congrats, Erica! We must have similar taste: three of your five star books (The History of Bees, Piranesi, and Convenience Store Woman) were five star books for me last year! History of Bees was beautiful and it seems like not many have heard of it, but I'm hoping the Birds, Bees, and Bunnies prompt for 2023 might encourage more of our group to read it.

Yes! I really loved that one! It made me want to read a lot more about bees, haha so I may choose non-fiction for that prompt next year.

And thanks! Feels good to actually finish this year after a few years of not finishing in time (major Covid related reading slump for a few years seems to be finally broken!)

Williams Daughter of the Forest (Sevenwaters, #1) by Juliet Marillier Julie of the Wolves (Julie of the Wolves, #1) by Jean Craighead George Troubling a Star (Austin Family Chronicles, #5) by Madeleine L'Engle Secrets of the Dragon Sanctuary (Fablehaven, #4) by Brandon Mull Princess of the Midnight Ball (The Princesses of Westfalin Trilogy, #1) by Jessica Day George

My most creative twist on a prompt
I pretty much took each prompt literally and was not that creative.

The prompt I cheated on
It is not really cheating, but I used The Wump World (a picture book) for "A Book Related to Earth Day" because I didn't have any other books in mind and I knew that book would be a quick read.

My favorite prompt
A book related to one of the 22 Tarot Major Arcana cards (#17 The Star)--I loved the variety of this prompt

My least favorite prompt
A book with gothic elements--I am not that into the horror genre, but thankfully I was able to find a book with gothic elements that was not horror.

A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!)
Skin of the Sea by Natasha Bowen

A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!)

Misty | 1485 comments I'm done! Woo hoo!

5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge
Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor
Under the Udala Trees by Chinelo Okparanta
In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez
The Island of Missing Trees by Elif Shafak
The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson
Glory by NoViolet Bulawayo
Sisters & Husbands by Connie Briscoe
The Daughters of Temperance Hobbs by Katherine Howe
The Bone Farm by Dean Koontz
Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel
The Guncle by Steven Rowley
Duma Key by Stephen King
All American Boys by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Keily
The Merciless Ones by Namina Forna
We Should All Be Feminists by Chimananda Ngozi Adichie
Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo
Birds of a Feather by Jacqueline Winspear
House of Sky and Breath by Sarah J. Maas
All the Things We Never Knew: Chasing the Chaos of Mental Illness by Sheila Hamilton
To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis
Rosemary: The Hidden Kennedy Daughter by Kate Clifford Larson

My most creative twist on a prompt
I'm not very creative with the prompts! For prompt #12 - A book related to glass - I read a book called Minimalists by K. Robert Schwartz. One of the main musicians in the Minimalist movement was Philip Glass.

The prompt I cheated on
I didn't really cheat on any prompt - although I hated one prompt so much that I decided that if I am ever in that position again - I will use a "wild card"

My favorite prompt
29- A book set on or near a body of water - for this prompt I read Duma Key by Stephen King

My least favorite prompt
47 - A book with handwriting on the cover - I absolutely hated this prompt. Almost every book with "handwriting" on the cover just has a fancy font. I finally saw that newer Agatha Christie books had a copy of her signature on them, so I decided to read one of her books. I found one in the included Audible catalog, but the cover didn't have her signature. I decided I was going to just cheat, and listen to it anyway, but then, weirdly enough, I saw that the cover actually had papers with real handwriting on them. LOL. I ended up loving the book, but I also promised myself that if we ever had such a frustrating prompt again, I would just give my permission for a "wild card."
The Secret Adversary by Agatha Christie

A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!)
I have a few:
The Guncle by Steven Rowley
Under the Udala Trees by Chinelo Okparanta
The Island of Missing Trees by Elif Shafak
Glory by NoViolet Bulawayo
In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez

A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!)
Luckily, not as many of these:
Teach Me by Alexandria House
Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

Women authors: 37 = 71%
Men authors: 15 = 29%
I met my goal of 70% women!

Sometimes it just feels nice to say it in a different language! Ain't translators the handiest things? =D

Back at the beginning of the summer, I thought it might take me until the end of the year to finish, which is okay since that's how this challenge is set up. But, I like having not much to do in December since I spend a good deal of time in that month setting up my plans for reading next year. And now I am at the end of things at the end of October.

5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge
Buster Keaton: A Filmmaker's Life
Olive Kitteridge
The Hunger Games
The Storyteller
Call the Midwife: A Memoir of Birth, Joy, and Hard Times

My most creative twist on a prompt
I didn't intentionally have a creative twist But I guess this could be called creative: I had a book in a prompt that didn't fit the prompt, which I didn't realize until oshizu pointed it out to me; and told me where it would fit; and that another book I'd read would fit the prompt I'd gotten incorrect.

The prompt I cheated on
I'm not sure if you call it cheating, but I did end up swapping out books on some of my prompts; toward the middle of things -- subbing books I'd read this year with those I'd planned to read for the challenge. I just didn't have the energy to read the stuff I'd chosen at the 1st of the year; and decided to do some swapping out where I could.

My favorite prompt
A book from historical fiction genre

My least favorite prompt
39. A book from the TIME list of 100 Best YA Books of All Time. This was the only space I used a wildcard this year.

A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!)
All Yours
The Storyteller

A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!)
There weren't any books I wish I hadn't read. Some are just better than others and I don't regret trying any of them.

I really had a good time reading this year and am looking forward to joining in on next year's challenge.

Pepita | 63 comments - 5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge
I very rarely give 5 stars but I used a lot of books by Lindsey Davis for many different prompts; I love her Didius Falco series and managed to listen to the whole 20 on audiobooks this year, most of which I had read before but this time I did it in order which was great!
- My most creative twist on a prompt
24. A book related to inclement weather 'To the Lighthouse' by Virginia Woolf ...it was inclement weather that prevented an excursion to the lighthouse disappointing a young James Ramsay in the early part of the book but not sure how significant that was to the story
- The prompt I cheated on
21. A book with one of the Monopoly tokens on the cover 'The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry' by Rachel Joyce
I was trying for the monopoly token of a boot but really they were just shoes!
- My favorite prompt
20. A fiction or nonfiction book that is set during 1900 -1951 'The Secrets of Ashmore Castle' by Cynthia Harrod-Eagles
..gave me an excuse to read a new book out by a favourite author
- My least favorite prompt
19. A book that involves alternate reality, alternate worlds, or alternate history 'The Mother Fault' by Kate Mildenhall
...not my preferred genre
- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!)
28. A book that won an award from Powell's list of book awards 'Deacon King Kong' by James McBride
- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!)
......don't have any regrets about any books that I have read for this challenge

chysodema | 137 comments Complete! This was my first year doing book challenges and I had a great time. I finished ATY on 11/1/22.
My list of completed prompts for the challenge: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge:
The Liar’s Knot (the next book in a series)
Iron Widow (book by an API author)
I am very sparing with my 5 stars, I read a lot of other good books as well.

My most creative twist on a prompt:
Reviewing my reading, I am surprised to see I played it pretty straight. No creative twists. All the more interesting because I only picked up ATY in May, so I was fitting a lot of my earlier reading into the prompts, rather than mainly reading in response to specific prompts.

The prompt I cheated on:
I didn't get very far into Love in Color: Mythical Tales from Around the World, Retold (A book related to mythology) before DNFing it. But I used it for the prompt anyways.

My favorite prompt:
A book connected to the phrase "Here (There) Be Dragons." Not because I loved the book I read (I did not) but because the prompt itself delights me.

My least favorite prompt:
A book related to Earth Day. I'm just not a books related to Earth Day kind of reader. This was the last prompt I finished, and it felt like doing homework.

A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!):
Cocaine Blues (A book where the main character is a female detective/private eye/police officer) - looking forward to reading more Phryne Fisher!

A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!):
Elsewhere (A book from the TIME list of 100 Best YA Books of All Time) - this was casual-racist garbage
Verity (A book with gothic elements) - I genuinely wish I could remove this book from my brain

Bec | 1337 comments Finished on the 9 November 2022. 105 books read/listened to to date, but only 52 towards the challenge.

- 5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge
This Book Belongs To - 8. 3 books set on three different continents - Book 1- South America
Wish You Were Here - 26. 2 books with the same word in the title - book 1 (wish - I actually read 2 books with the same name)
Reminders of Him - 5. A book by an author with 2 sets of double letters in their name
Caging Grace (Grace Series, #1). - 4. A book that fits your favorite prompt that did not make the list
Night Road - 31. A book published at least 10 years ago

- My most creative twist on a prompt
I'm not creative so none for this.

- The prompt I cheated on
Well for 4. A book that fits your favorite prompt that did not make the list I basically just found a prompt that matched the book I read, so it wasn't necessarily my favourite. And I went with A book without the words "a", "an" or "the" in the title
and for 49. A book connected to the phrase "Here (There) Be Dragons" I used a book that one of the characters (not the main character but the main character's sister - who has her own series of books) has a dragon, and he was in the book - not a major role given it wasn't their series.

- My favorite prompt
I didn't have a favourite prompt, just favourite books (listed as 5 stars above). But I did like 51. A book published in 2022 as I could include one of my many ARCs and 33. The next book in a series as I'm always reading series.

- My least favorite prompt
30. A book related to mythology
I started about 5 different books and ended up getting through The Chaos of Stars on audio. It was okay but I really struggled with the prompt.

- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!)
Night Road - 31. A book published at least 10 years ago
The Guest List - 24. A book related to inclement weather

- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!)
Migrations - 16. A book related to Earth Day
I know so many people raved about this one, but it just didn't do anything for me.
Dear Committee Members - 34. A book with an academic setting or with a teacher that plays an important role
The Westing Game - 39. A book from the TIME list of 100 Best YA Books of All Time

- 5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge
Babel by R.F. Kuang (alternate history)
The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson (inclement weather)
Build Your House Around My Body by Violet Kupersmith (flora & fauna)
Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia (nationality in title)
The Anthropocene Reviewed by John Green (time-related word in title)
Tehanu by Ursula K. LeGuin (published at least 10 years ago)

- My most creative twist on a prompt
I'm not sure I really had one. I did manage to cover 6 continents with the 3 continents books. Queenie (Europe), The Map of Salt and Stars (Asia, Africa, Europe), and The Inheritance of Orquidea Divina (North and South America).

- The prompt I cheated on
Fits your favorite prompt that didn't make the list. I don't like these open ended ones, I just wait until the end and pick a prompt based on the books I've read.

- My favorite prompt
Here there be dragons, inclement weather, and 22 or more letters in the title.

- My least favorite prompt
A book related to glass was somehow the very last one I completed, so that one.

- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!)
The Glass Hotel by Emily St. John Mandel was more engaging than I expected. I'm glad I forced myself to read it for the glass prompt.

- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!)
Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson (female private eye) was enjoyable but it was a cliff hanger and there are 5 or so books in the series. Didn't intend to commit to that many books!

- 5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge
Commonwealth by Ann Patchett Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen Harry's Trees by Jon Cohen When You Trap a Tiger by Tae Keller Exile Music by Jennifer Steil
- My most creative twist on a prompt
Probably using non-human characters to force myself to read The Last Battle and finish the Narnia series which has taken me years to read

- The prompt I cheated on--none

- My favorite prompt
"Here Be Dragons" because it had so many ways to interpret it (and Throne of Jade (Temeraire, #2) by Naomi Novik was a great book as well)

- My least favorite prompt
Alternate reality as I am not fantasy or sci-fi fan at all, but I did enjoy The Burning Page (The Invisible Library, #3) by Genevieve Cogman

- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!) Commonwealth read for author with two sets of double letters in name

- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!) none, I enjoyed my challenge reads

- 5 Star books that I read for the ATY Challenge
Firekeeper's Daughter
Artificial Condition
Entangled Threads
Parable of the Sower
Mrs. Stein Solves a Crime
A mix of genres - Young Adult, Science Fiction, Historical Mystery
- My most creative twist on a prompt
Horizon had 5 continents instead of one for the multi week prompt 3 books set on 3 separate continents. The other two books covered the 2 additional continents
- The prompt I cheated on
I used rereads for 4 of the prompts, but I was doing a lot of rereading this year beyond the ATY challenge
- My favorite prompt
48. A book posted in one of the ATY Best Book of the Month threads in 2021 or 2022 - lots of good choices & Firekeeper's Daughter was one of my 5-star reads
- My least favorite prompt
46. A book with a non-human as one of the main characters - thought this would be easy, but it so was so late in the challenge I had already the best books for it for other prompts and couldn't get the ones I wanted from the library in time (e.g., Martha Wells and Becky Chambers had long wait lists)
- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (but I’m so glad I did!)
Parable of the Sower had been on my TBR for years, and this gave me the impetus to read it this year
- A book I might not have read if not for the ATY Challenge (and I wish I hadn’t!)
The Haunting of Meade Mansion - a most forgettable book - I had no memory of the plot when I was looking over the books in my aty-2022 folder
