Azimov and the colonization of the Galaxy

When we think space sci-fi, we immediately think of planets colonization and our species (and other species) all over the galaxy in terraformed exoplanets. That's mostly thanks to Azimov and the influence his ideas had on future sci-fi writers.
Yet Azimov's view of that reality is flawed, and he realizes this in the last two Foundation books: Foundation's Edge, and Foundation and Earth, where the characters are racing to find a new model for the species to follow.
Azimov, at the time of writing these 2 books, had obviously given up on this Galactic Empire system and even the democratic system of the first foundation or the power hierarchy of the second foundation. Instead he tries to define a new model where peace and love are the driving forces, and the respect of ALL life AND objects, in dire contrast with his previous vision of colonization where both life and objects are completely disregarded.
I don't think we'll be a planet colonizing species. We'll do it for a time but we'll regret it, then we'll eventually become so advanced that it will become unnecessary. Thoughts anyone?
