Whilst you don’t need to have read all of the books in the series, it does help you to pick up on small details, and I found that I was thinking back to other books and how certain objects linked throughout the series. This book opens in early 1960s New York, at a time when everything was about to change. Franny, Jet and Vincent are three siblings who have inherited magical abilities from their mother. We then follow the three children as they grow up and become adults, and we see how the curse affects them. I am not a big fan of magical realism although I did enjoy this book. The strand that I liked most was the storyline around Vincent as he and his family tried to find a way to avoid being sent to Vietnam. Whilst this wasn’t the main thrust of the book, I found it interesting to read about the lengths he and his family went to, to help him avoid the draft.
