Thanks for the detailed review, and your extended commentary. Personally, I loved the story of the town and the people's problems dealing with the wolves. I thought that was an excellent story in itself. I never really liked or related to Fr. Calahan, so can't say much about his appearance. Hoping you'll find the closure you're looking for in the upcoming two books. We'll talk after you finish.
