I did read them in Australia, yes. They would have been short novels for children or teens, but they weren't from the curriculum.

It was a book or a series of books, which would have been short-ish. The covers were white with the title in black and a small drawing of one of the characters on the front. There were also black and white drawings in the books themselves.
The stories were pretty simple as far as I can remember. There was at least one story from the pov of a maid in a castle, who might have been the main character. She might have loved a prince or knight.
The things I remember the most was one character which was made of rocks- some sort of golem maybe. He wasn't very intelligent and I think he mostly just wandered around- I think the maid may have been his friend or looked after him. There was a house where these three witches lived, who wove this magical tapestry which maybe controlled fate? The house the witches lived in had a path out the front which could fly, and the path picked people up and took them to the witches' house sometimes.
