Jen K | 3143 comments Miles, the son of Cordelia and Aral Vorkosigan of Shards of Honor, is a struggling young man. His heart's desire is to join the Imperial Academy but due to his physical limitations from birth, he quickly fails the entry exam with two broken legs. Dejected without a plan for a future, he is sent to visit his grandmother on the Beta Colony with his bodyguard Bothari and his lovely daughter Elena. In true space opera fashion, Miles somehow ends up with an outdated space shuttle and a couple of lieges in need of a second chance which grow into a great group of mercenaries that he leads on fiction but also a genius for people. Miles is able to inspire his group to dig deep and achieve unimagined feats.

Very entertaining space opera. I really enjoyed Miles as such a complex and unexpected (to himself) hero. I love how he was able to inspire those around him and rely on their strengths to implement his clever strategies. If one thinks too hard, it really shouldn't have worked as well as it did but that also made it more fun. I appreciate that Miles struggled with his personal demons and it wasn't also happy coincidences. I would like to read more with Miles.
