Eileen | 863 comments Sylvs, I read the first 6 chapters and found the set-up to draw me in pretty quickly. There is already some mystery regarding Scarlett's fiance and Tella is really annoying, lol!

Sylvs (NOVELty Reads) (noveltyreads) | 463 comments Mod
I am really enjoying the book at the moment. I've read this book around 5 years ago but I remember very little so it's really nice to rediscover an old favourite. The writing hooked me in pretty quickly and I loved reading the glimpses into Legend's backstory. I also like the world building and I can't wait to see it develop in the next chapters!

Eileen | 863 comments Yeah, I read this 3 years ago while I was traveling, and while I remember finding it a really quick read, I never got around to reading the next two books, so I wanted to reread this so that the later books would make sense, lol! I agree with you that the world-building is really interesting!

Ahaha me too I've only read Caraval but I really want to read Legendary and Finale considering we're introduced to so many characters that make a later appearance in Ballad of Never After

Eileen | 863 comments Right! I just noticed her new series, but realized that it would make more sense if I finished this trilogy so I HAD to finish this trilogy first, lol! I managed to read a few chapters today and she and Julian have made it into the gates (he barely made it) and she's explored the inn a little. He's hilarious and I am getting the feeling he does everything just to get a rise out of her, lol! I really like Scarlett, but she really takes everything so seriously, so he's a great foil character for her.

I'm really enjoying these characters too! I have a feeling that this could be one of my favourite book trilogies but I've been known for saying that and then regretting it later lol.

Eileen | 863 comments Right yeah, I'm always worried that the author will let us down, ha ha!

Me too but we shall see in the upcoming books :D

Eileen | 863 comments Just making it to chapter 15 and trying to decide if Julian is a good guy or a bad guy, lol! Having just finished The School for Good and Evil, the whole good vs. evil is foremost in my mind, ha!

I'm finding their (Nigel and Scarlett) discussion about fate to be interesting.

Oooh yes! I remember a few things about Julian's character from my first read but I want to see if my opinion about him will change considering I last read this book 5 years ago.

Eileen | 863 comments I made it to chapter 32 and I'm getting whiplash from changing my mind so many times. I mean, I'm starting to really love Julian, but I'm also wondering who he REALLY is and if we're going to get some big reveal at the end that tells us he really IS a bad dude, ha ha! I honestly have zero memory of the end, so I can't remember how this all resolves. The connection with her grandmother and the appearance of her dad and fiance--well, I hate her dad even more than I did before! He's definitely the villain to hate in this book!

Oooh yes! He was horrible right from the start! I'm also beginning to question Julian's motives. I think I remember what happens but at the same time I'm constantly second guessing myself as well and I have no idea where his loyalties truly lie. I'm excited to see how this book will end though.

Eileen | 863 comments Yeah, it's really interesting having read this book and knowing that there were several twists but not remember any of the details is making this a more interesting journey, ha ha!

Ahaha all good I'm still taking my time through this read but I'm really enjoying it. I'll hopefully finish soon so we can start Legendary together :)

message 18: by Eileen (new)

Eileen | 863 comments Yep, just let me know when you finish. I'm trying to catch up on ARCs, including one that was published this month. Although I didn't even get it until a few days ago, after the publication date! But I also finished a book that will be published on August 30, so it's all good, lol! I didn't remember that this first book ended up on a cliffhanger, but I'm so glad I decided to reread it before starting with Legendary!

Ahhh I know the feeling! I have so many ARCs I need to get through myself! I'm glad we're making our way through our TBRs and through this series. I'm excited to make a start on Legendary :)

Eileen | 863 comments Yes, me too! FYI, I just finished Heat Wave and The Dragon’s Promise and while neither was as great as the previous book, I thought they were both solid conclusions to the series. I think if they had removed or redone the first 30% of the Dragon's Promise (I think you'll see what I mean when you read it), I would have rated it all the stars. But I still liked how it ended. Heat Wave overall was a solid ending, but I still liked the second book the most.

Oooh I have an ARC of Heat Wave too but I haven't read it yet. I loved the Extraordinaries and I liked Flash Fire but probably not as much as book one. I'm so excited to read it though! I still need to read Six Crimson Cranes and the rest of the Blood of Stars Duology but they are on my TBR this year :D

message 22: by Eileen (new)

Eileen | 863 comments I haven't read Blood of Stars, but now I want to read it. I've requested it from my library, so I'm waiting to get it. :)

Oooh yay! I've heard good things about it and am hoping to read it soon since I'm trying to read more mythology/fantasy this year. Maybe we should do a buddy read of this series together sometime? XD

Eileen | 863 comments I'll be lucky if I get my TBR under 600 by the end of the year. Each time I get it under control, I keep on adding more books, ha ha! Although I have managed to get it down from 650 to around 622 since we started this challenge, so that's good. But I keep on finding new books to add, lol!

Eileen | 863 comments By the way, I've been reading The Shadow Watch series, which is a 4-book YA fantasy series and I think you'd probably enjoy it! Lots of great characters with many being grey characters and a second book that completely turned everything upside down. It's not the typical YA fantasy, but I'm really loving it.

Eileen | 863 comments Okay, I'm going to start reading Legendary, but I'm planning on moving slowly through it, so you can catch up. I didn't like Tella that much in the first book, and this second book seems to be focused on her story, but based on the first 10%, I am already starting to understand Tella better. So that's a good sign I think.

Oooh yes! That is a good sign. Tella was okay, I didn't mind her but I didn't love her either. I'm glad she is better understood in book 2

Eileen | 863 comments I'm not quite at the 50% point of Legendary. I'm probably going to take a break for a couple of days because I suddenly got two new ARCs that I want to get through, lol! Plus A Thousand Steps Into Night came in from my library and it's so good!

No worries and yeah I kind of fell back with the reading schedule but I'm hoping to catch up ASAP. I am almost finished with Caraval and I'm about to start Legendary now 😅

Eileen | 863 comments Awesome! Let me know when you start Legendary! For now, I have two books I'm reading that I'm trying to finish (I'm always slower reading by myself than with an audio accompaniment because the audio helps me focus, lol) and A Thousand Steps. I can easily insert another book before starting back up with Legendary. :)

Eileen | 863 comments Hee hee, if you're a fan of Backman, it is arguably one of his best. So far I haven't found any lemons yet, but I'm getting ready to read the Beartown trilogy and I've been told that the second two books are not nearly as good as the first. But I have the ARC for the third book, so I'll be reading the entire trilogy this month!

Eileen | 863 comments The entire book Anxious People is driven by dialog and he is so good at writing great dialog. When I think of a writer who is able to describe the human condition so well, he is one of the first to come to mind.
