I just came upon this - apparently this "society" was featured in a series of parodies by the early 20th century author Carolyn Wells. Wells (who wrote 170 books!!) had a series detective, Fleming Stone - not much of a detective, since, in the stories I read, he doesn't appear until much later in the book and doesn't do much except sum up. Her "society" was headed up by Sherlock Holmes, and included other literary detectives - Arsene Lupin, The Thinking Machine, C Auguste Dupin, Raffles, etc. I have to think that Wells got away with these stories, written from 1912-1917, because they were parodies - most were still copyrighted. Amaon's made them available on Kindle for 99 cents.
