What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

I believed the title to be Meteor, but haven't found. First of book describes threat, theories & panic. Meteor hits & descriptions of worldwide damage, primarily coastal areas lost & land hit by rock fragments. Main character & family in CA trying to escape over mountains before hit. After the collision, various survivor stories including family who made it out of CA - selfishness & selflessness. Not the book with the crippled child or with the plot to shoot out of sky. That may have been a theory, but not a main plot point in this book. Hoping to find copy to purchase.

The classic one is Lucifer's Hammer by Larry Niven.

It does take place in California, including the mountains. I don't remember a crippled child or a plan to shoot down the comet/meteor although it's possible.

Any chance it could be that? If not, might as well rule it out straight away.

Meteor by Edmund H. North and Franklin Coen is a novelization of a 1979 movie that was a lot like this.
