Beth (bbulow) | 2403 comments Nicole Deese's All That It Takes is August's Group Buddy Read!

GR Summary:
When the ever-cautious Val Locklier finally agrees to a cross-country move with her nine-year-old son to take a job with her best friend, Molly, everything she had planned for the future unravels within the first week. After pushing aside her anxieties about renting an apartment from Molly's twin brother, whom she barely knows, she accepts an invitation for an elite filmmaker's mentorship. Caught between her insecurities and new possibilities, she feels completely unprepared for the challenges ahead.

Pastor Miles McKenzie returns home from abroad to discover that not only does he have an intriguing new tenant living upstairs, he's been banished to a ministry on life support. Disillusioned and restless, he pursues a relationship with Val without stopping to consider the timing or asking God to direct his steps.

As Val struggles to stop hiding behind the camera and Miles wrestles with shattered expectations, they'll find that authentic love and sacrifice must go hand in hand.

Karin | 44 comments I've been away, but am glad people are liking it so far. I've read three books by Nicole Deese and am definitely a fan of her writing, although I liked the book before this somewhat better. BUT three stars is a LIKE for me, and not a negative rating!!! I take GR at its word with 3 being a like, but gave her other two books 4+ stars, but this one was hovering around 3.5 stars.

Awesome :)!

Beth (bbulow) | 2403 comments I’m happy to see the love for this book, too!

I’ve battled two sicknesses this month, so I haven’t been on GR much to post.

I love the realness of her characters, how well she wrote Val’s son. The friendship that builds up between Val and Miles, and the very real issues that Deese sheds light on in a kind and loving way.

Tucker was absolutely adorable . . . just the right blend of exuberant preteen, and anxious young man who wanted to protect his mom.
I really liked the 'meetcute' between Val and Miles, and the way their friendship sparked into something more, even though they both had some things to learn about the ministry to which God was calling them.

Storm Bay (stormbay) | 18 comments I agree--Tucker was adorable, and I also liked the friendship between Van & Miles, etc. One of the great things Deese does is bring up real issues in life along with things Christians can do to help, etc. I want to read more books by her!

Have you read Before I Called You Mine Before I Called You Mine by Nicole Deese yet? That one was a TOTAL 5-star read for me . . . but, I'm going to say right off that this is a 'tissue warning' book . . . as in, keep your kleenex handy!
