It's nomination time again! I guess the usual rules - up to two novels/novellas, SF or fantasy, published in 2022, per member.

Leticia wrote: "Have you read In the Shadow of Lightning?"

I haven't and it can be nominated

message 5: by Leticia (new)

Leticia (leticiatoraci) Good, as sci-fi I would nominate Under Fortunate Stars

SF: Upgrade by Blake Crouch

Fantasy: not sure

I have several Sf this month and no fantasy *sigh*
Ymir Rich Larson
Drunk on All Your Strange New Words Eddie Robson
and
August Kitko and the Mechas from Space Alex White
all look really great but I have no room to nominate them

Just recently I had all fantasy and no SF. I will try to go back and see what I nominated but that did not win

Fantasy: Babel, or The Necessity of Violence: An Arcane History of the Oxford Translators' Revolution"

Both are on my TBR pile so I guess I won't nominate something else

I guess for fantasy I will second In the Shadow of Lightning

message 10: by Kristenelle (new)

Kristenelle | 641 comments I’m very excited for Nona and Babel. So I won’t bother nominating anything.

A side note: do we nominate Nona as SF?

message 12: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlyanne) | 30 comments Can I second Under Fortunate Stars? I have read it but would love to read again and also hear the discussion. We all like such different things, it is amazing and interesting.

Kimberly wrote: "Can I second Under Fortunate Stars?"

Yes, seconding is possible, but if in other groups it is used to limit numbers of nominees for voting (only seconded nominees end up in polls), we don't have such a rule, therefore it just shows your support but nothing else

message 14: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlyanne) | 30 comments Gotcha. Thanks for the clarification!

message 15: by Kristenelle (new)

Kristenelle | 641 comments I think Nona could be sci-fi or fantasy. I vote sci-fi?

Yeah the locked tomb is a weird hybrid of fantasy, SF and horror. let's nominate in SF because the fantasy field is so crowded right now.

message 17: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca | 400 comments I'll second Under Fortunate Stars and Nona the Ninth for SF and nominate What Moves the Dead for Fantasy.

Well, I was basicly looking at last month's unsuccessful nominees for interesting targets.

The polls are out:
Sci-Fi
Fantasy

The polls have closed. Babel, or The Necessity of Violence: An Arcane History of the Oxford Translators' Revolution by R.F. Kuang won the Fantasy poll by a landslide, but the SF poll ended on a tie. I flipped a coin, and the winner is Eversion by Alastair Reynolds.

message 21: by Leticia (new)

Leticia (leticiatoraci) It seems that my ARC of Shadow of Lightning is only a sneak peek, which is quite annoying. I asked for it on Libby but it says I'll get it in 8 weeks so I might not be able to get to it this month.

Great, Antti, thanks for informing us about the results!

message 23: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca | 400 comments I’ve recommended both to my library, fingers crossed they fulfill the request!

message 24: by Kristenelle (new)

Kristenelle | 641 comments We should probably just do a buddy read of Nona since it is a third book in a series that half of us hate. 😆 I’m planning to reread Harrow for space opera September if anyone wants to join me.

Yes, a buddy read is perfect for it and I may be the one, who both hates and plans to read it, for it likely ends up nominated for some awards

Yep, I skipped 1/3 of the first and much of the second, so thanks for not making this a monthly book

Kalin | 515 comments Mod
I'm fine with that, I'll read it regardless of if it's a group read. Definitely my most anticipated of the year.
