Does the sequence have to be found consecutively, or is a word like TEMPTATION, with the O between the TI and N OK?

No, the task specifically requires the "3 letter sequence TIN."

does it have to be in the same word or Don't Let in the Coldust in order.

as in let in has the tin in order but in different words.
