From the point of view of aviation and general security, it would be a total disaster if some bad guys were waiting with a shoulder launcher nearby.
Yeah, it's a weird thought, but I still can't shake the incident that happened 20 years ago: https://www.x-rayscreener.co.uk/terro... , as I was flying the same flight only few weeks earlier...

J. Gowin | 7974 comments The coolest aircraft which I've personally seen land is the U2. My grandfather was a pilot and aviation buff. One day he found out a U2 usually returned from a regular mission at a nearby airbase.

I remember there were about a dozen people with folding chairs, coolers, binoculars, and cameras outside of the fence line.

The Dragon Lady was spooky because she just appeared out of nowhere. One moment people were pointing towards a dot which was dropping out of the sky. The next, there was an all black airplane leveling off. Later, it was explained to me that to land her the pilot pulls the nose up to stall her at 70,000 feet. After they drop her from the edge of space to the glide path, they need another pilot (who's rated to land the U2) to follow her at over 100 mph and call in distance to the ground.

This is what it looks like from the chase car.

Too bad I hadn't seen it before getting a ticket in Poland last week

Lizzie | 2057 comments I have never done the spill something trick. Most of us have traveling mugs in the car so I don't think it would work here.

All the times I have been pulled over for speeding and I was going more than 20 miles over the limit, I did not get a ticket. I have had a few for going less than 10 miles over in MIlwaukee. Personally, I felt I was targeted for the Miata as a Honda, a Toyota, and a Nissan were passing me each time. However, it is also karma for the times I didn't get a ticket.

The "I just got the car thing worked for me one weekend" as I was pulled over locally 3 times. I claimed my gas pedal was stuck on the floor mat for one of them (which actually happened to me driving it home on the freeway (no cops) and I couldn't figure out why the car kept accelerating).

One day I thought for sure I would get a ticket doing 100 on the interstate. The officer asked me how my day was and I told him it had been going well but I figured it was about to go down hill now. He gave me a lecture and let me go. Later I learned he has done this with many people who drive that route regularly and if he pulls you over the 3rd time then he comes down hard on you. I am very careful in that stretch of highway.

Driving from Milwaukee home (50 miles) because my son has been found after missing for2 weeks, I was doing 125 when the cop pulled me over. I told him why and he said get behind me, but we are not going over 100 and I can only take you to the county border.

I don't drive fast in towns and such. Mostly I am just a bit crazy on the interstates and highways, especially in the southwest where there is nothing for many, many miles. AZ interstates are 75 mph

J. Gowin | 7974 comments One night I got pulled over for speeding while on my way home. I pulled into a gas station that was closed for the evening, and I turned off the dash lights.

The deputy asked, "Do you know how fast you were going?"

I responded that I didn't because the gauge light went out. I added that it was probably a popped fuse "you know how old cars are."

He gave me a warning and sent me on my way.

Everytime I get asked that question of do you know ..., my answer is, "No, I was watching the road."

Russian one is the only one that is true - we will all die... The rest may have some caveats.

J. Gowin | 7974 comments One of my joys in life is driving in the wee hours of the morning. With the roads empty, I can bomb down the dark highway with next level talk radio coming out of the speakers. As an example, I offer this clip of the Great Art Bell defending Captain Kirk from a caller.

Lizzie | 2057 comments I just bought a condo in milwaukee. FINALLY fell into the trap - daughter's playing on my symapathy for my granddaughter. This last year, my daughter's grandmother died and my granddaughter's patneral grandmother passed. So I am what is left. I do have a really special place in my heart for my granddaughter. My son was ok with me going there rather than to where he is in Phoenix, because he figures I will be a more normal influnece on my granddaughter, which is kind of weird to me, but ok, as long as he isn't offended. My money goes further in WI than it does here.

I am not looking forward to that whole packing and moving thing. But, other than that, I am excited. Gave the chef a deadline of May 12, when I close, to decide what he is doing. Close in May, will move June or July.
