What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

There is a book about a 19th century or perhaps turn of the century woman who is put in an asylum by her husband for "woman troubles." It's by a Scandinavian author and translated - I thought quite a famous book but I'm having trouble finding the title and author. I remember the cover was black with a picture of the asylum on the cover. Anyway - Swedish or Scandinavian author, woman wrongly put in asylum. Thanks for your help.
