Mahi | 230 comments Hi everyone! I’m so excited for this :D

We also need a restaurant name. Any ideas?

message 8: by Natasha (new)

Natasha | 1140 comments Hello!

Is there a type of food people like? Should we do a funny name?

There's a cafe/bakery in my town called Pied Out. It makes such good pies and scones and cinnamon buns and so many other delicious items.

Mahi | 230 comments The Last Slice?

It’s dessert-y but also allows for all kinds of food since we need to serve everything

message 11: by Mahi (last edited Aug 17, 2022 08:48AM) (new)

Mahi | 230 comments I haven’t played this before but when I’m excited about something I get very obsessed so I’ve read everything I can get my hands on about this and looked at the 2020 game a bit. So I think I have a handle on the rules, but I’m sure we’ll all figure it out as we go.

Laura..devouring books like crumpets (lauzacookie) | 502 comments ohh I like the last slice... makes me think of pizza yum, ohh I may try look on 2020 game try to get my bearings good idea

Mahi | 230 comments I'm adding a sheet called Meal Info to our spreadsheet. It's pretty much the given Meals and points sheet but edited so it's easier to look at all the info at once and with some corrected things because the given sheet doesn't match up with the rules post and I can't edit it because it's locked.

Can you all request access to the sheet? Then we can all add our books when we read them.

message 15: by Jax (new)

Jax (jaxn) | 286 comments I like The Last Slice. Restaurant description could be something like "Pie, in all it's glories"

Also, was thinking we should try and get a sixth person. We know that the first month is capped at 80 but we don't know what the next two are.

Also, I've never done this before but I love reading challenges.

Hi Mahi,
Where do I go to request access to the spreadsheet?

If you click on the blue View Only button on the sheet a little thing pops up that has a request access button. And the mods will add you when they see it.
Or you can put your email here/send it to me and I can add you to the sheet!

The next two months are 90 and 100, unless things have changed from last time.

So yes, we should keep a lookout for new people on the Find a Team thread.

Laura..devouring books like crumpets (lauzacookie) | 502 comments I should be able to read a bit more the last 2 months, I'm in Greece we work seasonally so things will be dying down then, kids will go back to school, and I have a load of my family here from England until the 22nd of September so once October rolls in I'm free as a bird. Just September i can only commit to 15 books... Can we start books before challenge?

message 21: by Mahi (new)

Mahi | 230 comments It’s totally fine if you have different numbers of books across the months! Actually it’s good because we need more books in the later months.

Books that we start September 1st and onward count.

Mahi | 230 comments Oh nice, Gabriella (the sixth person I asked at the beginning) replied and wants to join our team. So that saves us from looking.

Sounds good.

Laura..devouring books like crumpets (lauzacookie) | 502 comments Thats a relief! yay on Gabriella! do page numbers count like in tower teams? I did look and it seems like it doesn't but wanted to check.

message 25: by Mahi (new)

Mahi | 230 comments I don't know about Tower Teams (this is my first team challenge!) but the page numbers are what Goodreads says for the edition you read, unless it was an audiobook or large print version, and in that case you should use the default version.

in tower teams the Larger the page count the more points we got? i wasnt sure if the same applied here?

message 27: by Mahi (last edited Aug 18, 2022 08:13AM) (new)

Mahi | 230 comments Ah.

There's 10 points for every book no matter the size.

But if the book is bigger we're allowed to use more scavenger words/letters for spell-it-out from it and there's 2 points per each of those. Also that lets us make more meals which each earn points.

So yep, larger books good.

I'm writing up a little "rules but simpler" post. It's getting longer than I expected so hopefully it's still useful, but trying to make this easier for everyone :)

Mahi | 230 comments HOW THIS WORKS

Read a book.
- Look out for food words.
- If you can reasonably record all of them, that’s great. If not, don’t sweat it. Just note like 5-10 food words with page # and try to include the high point ones (vinegar, chicken, rice, spices, desserts, drinks). See below for limitations.

Enter the book into the Books Read sheet.
- Rule of thumb for the whole spreadsheet: if the column’s colored green, you don’t need to fill it yourself, the formulas will take care of it.
- Don’t enter duplicate book names. The formulas get angry. If you read a book someone else has read, just add your name to the end of it (like Harry Potter Mahi).
- Col H: A book can be used to get scavenger words OR spell it out letters. We can’t mix and match. If there were not a lot of food words, you can select spell it out or if it was nonfiction with little spell it out potential you can select scavenger. But it’s up to you and we can change it later if needed.
- Col I: potential spell it out letters - first letter of title, author first/last name, character names, audiobook narrator, translator
- Col I: potential scavenger words - Col M tells you which meal categories can be made with this book based on page length (50 pgs < fresh < 160 pgs < fresh or frozen < 500 pgs < any). So don’t bother scavenging food words outside of that (ex: desserts and drinks other than coffee/tea if you’re not reading a 500+ word book)

Make meals in the Kitchen sheet.
- We get a certain number of scavenger words or spelling letters per book based on page length: 50 pgs < 2 < 160 pgs < 4 < 300 pgs < 8 < 500 pgs < 12. You can see how many we have for a book at Col J. More importantly you can see how many we have LEFT in Col L.
- You can combine these words/letters to make a meal. See the Meal Info sheet for what each meal requires.
- Example: Circe contains fish and salt. Six of Crows contains potato and lemon. This can make Fish and Chips!
- Example 2: Six of Crows (S), has a character named Inej (I). Frankenstein (F) has a character named Henry (H). We can spell FISH and make Fish and Chips!
- Put this info in the Kitchen sheet - each word/letter is a row. Add justification for each word (just the page/chapter/% it’s from) or letter (title/character/author, etc). IF you have all ingredients for the meal, put “yes” in Col L next to the meal number.
- We need to make some of every meal because when we get customers later each type only eats some kinds of meals.
- Write meal descriptions in the Shop Front sheet. This seems to be just for fun and doesn’t have points attached, for now.

I added some random examples to the sheet that you can look at. Doing that is how I figured out how all of this worked, so I super encourage ya'll to enter random books in and see how it works!

message 30: by Mahi (new)

Mahi | 230 comments Aaah it's finally done. Let me know if ya'll have questions or if I did something wrong.

I think each of us definitely needs to do the first two sections (reading books and entering them with their info) but we can all work together on the meals.

message 31: by Gabby (new)

Gabby | 243 comments Hey have DM’d the mods to see if I can get added to the team. Mahi suggested I popped on to say hi. Thanks for being willing to let me in even though I was slow in replying.
I am having to isolate from 2nd to 5th so should be able to get a lot read to help out. :)

All dependant on the Mods for now, :/

message 32: by Natasha (new)

Natasha | 1140 comments Thanks Mahi! Definitely going to have to read the rules a few times.

message 33: by Gabby (new)

Gabby | 243 comments Hey so out of curiosity are we going to aim more for scavenger parts or spell outs? Mainly so I can plan a little with the reading and not start books we may want before September. :)

message 34: by Mahi (last edited Aug 19, 2022 11:03AM) (new)

Mahi | 230 comments Because the minimum and maximum are the same for scavenger and spell it out, I think we can do both.

However for the meals that have a minimum of 1-2 we should only do scavenger because it would be a waste to use more slots to spell it out:
FRESH Coffee Min 1, Max 6
FRESH Tea Min 2, Max 4
DDC Alcoholic Drink Min 1, Max 5
DDC Dessert Min 1, Max 5
DDC Non-Alc Drink Min 1, Max 5

message 35: by Mahi (new)

Mahi | 230 comments A note for planning - we need to read at least some 500+ books to make the drinks and desserts. So if you think you can slot in a couple of those please do. We just need them across the group, not necessarily individually though, so don’t stress about it.

Laura..devouring books like crumpets (lauzacookie) | 502 comments I will read midnight sun it's over 600 pages and queen and conqueror which is 560 pages during September what do I need to look out for in them?

message 37: by Gabby (last edited Aug 19, 2022 12:53PM) (new)

Gabby | 243 comments I think this is a good excuse to get back into the 10 realms series. :) at least 4 of the books are over 500 pages if I remember correctly.

Cool will aim for scavenger then where I can. :)

If anyone is in to fantasy reads and hasn't read Legends & Lattes it is a really fun read and coffee is everywhere with some other food stuffs, nuts spices and the likes mentioned throughout. I can't reread it sadly as it is less than 6 months, 350ish pages so good for 8 items if I am correct.

Sadly while I am in the team I can't edit the worksheet. Is it only Jax and Mahi who can?

You can request access on the sheet but I don’t know when the mods will check it, they haven’t given anyone but me access yet (and I submitted the initial form). It would be much faster for you or anyone else in the team to send your email here or in PM and I’ll add you.

message 40: by Gabby (new)

Gabby | 243 comments Cool requested access if not will PM you. Sad thing is I am not sure which email address they have so that makes things hard for me as it may not be the email address I use for Microsoft. :/

I don't understand this part. Are we seeing read a book of 510 pages that has a bunch of mentions of dessert/dessert ingredients? I'm not sure I understand the strategy here.

Also, is our goal to make as many dishes as we can with the minimum number of ingredients so that we can cover as many customers as possible?

None of the books can be used to make the DDC (desserts, drinks, and cocktails) meal category unless they have 500+ words. And these are nice to have because they are worth 20 points each and can be made with just one scavenger word. (the best ratio of all the foods). Also the long books let us use 12 scavenger words/spell out letters.

So it’s good if more of us read some long books. But it’s not required.

message 43: by Mahi (last edited Aug 19, 2022 04:27PM) (new)

Mahi | 230 comments I haven’t really thought about overall strategy yet but that sounds good!

I’ll take a look at how to maximize points tonight.

message 44: by Jax (new)

Jax (jaxn) | 286 comments We also need a restaurant name and a short description of our restaurant if anyone has any ideas.

Laura..devouring books like crumpets (lauzacookie) | 502 comments come on....cant we tempt you with one more slice?

message 46: by Laura..devouring books like crumpets (last edited Aug 19, 2022 10:27PM) (new)

Laura..devouring books like crumpets (lauzacookie) | 502 comments Midnight sun is a paperback so search is hard but I remember the restaurant scene from twilight so had a quick look...

page 209 I have "I'll have a coke"

sorry just popping this here as they don't eat or drink much if memory serves me correctly, so if i could Have coke for this one it would be great

Laura..devouring books like crumpets (lauzacookie) | 502 comments i sent you message Mahi as still no access

message 48: by Mahi (last edited Aug 19, 2022 10:29PM) (new)

Mahi | 230 comments Laura what do you mean by have the coke one?

We can all reuse books and the words in them so you don’t need to worry about reserving anything :)

Laura..devouring books like crumpets (lauzacookie) | 502 comments ahhh so they can be the same words?

message 50: by Mahi (new)

Mahi | 230 comments Yep!

(And we will be forced to use same words multiple times because the Meals Fish and Chips and Fijian Curry have very specific requirements)
