Sara is given a job as the soon to open Dakota apartment building in New York after her quick actions stop the daughter of the Dakota’s architect from falling from a window. Bailey’s story begins with her having just left rehab for drug and alcohol abuse and is hired by her cousin to renovate her cousin’s apartment in the Dakota. The two stories are connected when Bailey discovers some old trunks in the buildings basement which reveal the family secrets. The strongest part of this book is the history and the research that the author put in, and I enjoyed learning about the Dakota and New York City in the late 19th Century. I also really liked Sara’s story and reading about her actions and understanding how she came to act in that way, as well as some of the other characters in the earlier story. We also see what society expected of women at that time, and how men had so much influence over them. Bailey’s story was not as interesting, and it seemed a lot mor modern than 1985, but it did need to be included to allow Sara’s story to be told, and the mystery to be unravelled.
