Pat the Book Goblin | 687 comments Hello everyone!

Hope last year didn't spank you too hard because it sure did me! Here are some funny challenge prompts to get you started on your reading for the new year! May this renewed trip around the sun bring you joy, and may the fleas of a thousand camels infest the clothes of the person who screws up your day and may their arms be too short to scratch!

Aaaaand here we goooo!!

A fact of life: After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says W T F. Read a comedy!

I am ready to face any challenges that might be foolish enough to face me! Read a book with a character who is ready to take on life and all the challenges thereof.

Alcohol! Because no great story started with someone eating a salad… Read a book with a character who is a writer.

I am on a seafood diet. I see food, and I eat it. Read a book with a character who is impulsive and spontaneous.

My mind is like my internet browser: 19 tabs open, 3 of them are frozen and I have no idea where the music is coming from. Read a book with a character over 50ish years old.

Me in the middle of Monday: It’s been a long week… Read a book with a character who hates the direction life has taken them.

There should be a weather app for people with social anxiety, like, “Today, Walmart will be partly cloudy with a 70% chance of seeing people you know.” Read a book with a character who is a 'nervous Nancy.'

Starting tomorrow whatever life throws at me, I’m ducking so it hits someone else! Read a book with a sassy character.

If people are talking behind your back…just fart! Read a book with a character who looks on the bright side of life.

Some people just need a high five…in the face, with a chair. Read a book with an infamous villain.

When nothing is going right—go left! Read a book with a wise mentor.

I NEED A HUGe amount of money. Read a book with a heist or one which involves a lot of thievery!

I’m smiling because you’re my sister, I’m laughing cuz there’s nothing you can do about it! Read a book with siblings as the main characters.

I’m sorry, did I roll my eyes out loud?? Read that book you’ve been dreading!

Never look back—you’re not going that way. Read a book with a moral lesson or a self help book.

“Revenge” sounds so mean that’s why I prefer to call it “returning the favor.” Read a book with a revenge plot.

Some people say their body is a temple…mine is a bouncy castle! Read a fantasy book!

Dear haters, I couldn’t help but notice that “awesome” ends with “ME” and “ugly” starts with “U.” Read a book where the main character struggles through the whole story but beats the antagonist at the end.

Sorry. Yesterday was the deadline for all complaints. Read a book where the main character owns a business.

I wish the dollar store sold gas. Read a book where the setting is somewhere poor.

I hug people I hate so I know how big to dig the hole in my backyard. Read a book about a character who likes to hold grudges.

In my defense I was left unsupervised. Read a book with a mischievous character.

Kathy E | 2345 comments I'm at 14 out of 22, but now I'm going to have to select books to match. So far I had just slotted in books I was reading.

Liane | 150 comments I have had a very slow year with classics so far. I’ve only finished 5, and only 4 meet the prompts. Back to reading!

Congratulations! I used some short stories too but they fit the categories :)

Kathy E | 2345 comments Thanks, Annette. You inspired me to finish. I had just the three left and was procrastinating.

Annette | 234 comments In November, unfinished challenges can seem daunting. Good short works can be invigorating. And a lot are better written than some of the lengthy tomes we take on.

Kathy E | 2345 comments So true. Some short stories are perfect.

Karin | 676 comments ETA -- all but 3 because I found one of the Trollope novels I've read with a business owner.

I've read a book for all but four of these, which is better than I initially thought I would do. Alas, no nervous Nancy's or optimists that I can think of in The Small House at Allington, nor industrialists. I did read one with one, though, now that I think of it, so I'll go back and see if I used it.

But wait--I am reading a book of short stories and some of those are classics. I keep forgetting I can use short stories.

I'll try to keep my eyes peeled whenever I get to any more classic mysteries in this large anthology; I should probably write a note and put in in there for a bookmark.

Karin | 676 comments Hooray for short stories! I have now done all but one, so hopefully that will be covered!
