Dr. James Watson, having just returned from the war, had been seeking a reasonably priced home in London when he learned of a man who wanted to share an apartment he could not afford on his own. Watson eagerly agreed to the situation and thus became the flatmate of Sherlock Holmes. Holmes was soon approached to help solve the murder of an American gentleman whose body was found in an abandoned house. There was no wound to the body but quite a lot of blood had been spilled and a message written in the blood: "Rache", which is the German word for revenge. Using his extensive powers of reasoning, Holmes quickly figured out the mystery and when a second murder occurred, that of the American's secretary, Holmes was not surprised. Holmes was soon proven to be correct and Watson is astonished at his new friend's detective skills. The motive for the murders is spelled out in part 2 of the story and, although the killings are horrible, I felt justified for the culprit. It was an interesting story and just the beginning of Holmes' illustrious career.
