This is the thread where you can submit a task idea for the 50 Point Task contest. The thread is now open for submissions and will close at Midnight Eastern time on October 5. Voting will start the next day, October 6 and will close at the end of the day on October 12. If the moderators determine that the vote is close, a 3-day runoff poll will be held. The person whose idea gets the most votes will host the 50 point task for the Fall Challenge.

The 50 point task will require:
1. Only 3 options. These options may not include more than 2 "sub options" - 6 total in the task.
2. One book per option.
3. Three books totaling at least 750 pages. Your task idea may require a higher page threshold but this must be disclosed in your entry.
4. No books with the genres children or kids on the main book page may be used.
5. Books whose main page lists any of these genres: Sequential Art, Comics, Comic Book, or Manga may not be used.
6. No “free choice” options will be allowed. This is a challenge, so tasks that have no element of challenge do not fit the purpose.
7. A task must be accessible to the majority of players, i.e. not limited to a specific format, edition, publisher, etc. and reviewable by the moderators.

Anyone eligible* to design a task may submit an idea for a task that follows the general guidelines above. Your idea should be a sketch that may be developed with the moderators.

* To be eligible to create a task, the player’s profile must be set up to accept Goodreads messages, and they must not have a task in the current challenge. Only one task per person per challenge.

The group will vote to determine the 50 point task. All ideas that fit the general guidelines will be included in a poll. The poll winner will develop their idea with the moderators to refine their task. The final task may differ from the original idea submission. The task will be posted as close to the midpoint as reasonably possible. The task creator will monitor and answer questions in the help thread.

Please include your Readerboard name and a title for your task. The entries will be listed by Readerboard name and task title in the poll. Please include only one task idea entry per post.

PLEASE DO NOT comment on people's entries in this thread - this is for submissions only - you will be able to comment when voting begins. Comments in this thread will be deleted.

50.1 - Jayne's Task - Autumn Moons

Is there anything lovelier than a crisp autumn evening with a full moon in the sky? It seems to be getting more common lately to refer to the full moon of the month by one of its traditional names, so we'll focus on those.

This is a 3 book challenge. The total page count for all books must be at least 750 pages. No books with the genres Children, Kids, Sequential Art, Comics, Comic Book, or Manga on the main book page may be used.

Book 1 - September: Harvest Moon

The harvest festival was always a bit of an occasion at my school when I was very young. There was invariably a special assembly where all the children would pile into the school hall and we'd all sing various harvest-related songs. Unfortunately, some twenty-odd years on, the only one I can remember even vaguely is 'Oats and Beans and Barley'!

Read a book with a word of four or more letters in the title that matches one of the lyrics in the song exactly.

Lyrics:

Oats and beans and barley grow,
Oats and beans and barley grow,
Do you or I or anyone know
How oats and beans and barley grow?

First the farmer sows his seed,
Then he stands and takes his ease,
Stamps his feet and claps his hand
And turns him round to view the land

Waiting for a partner,
Waiting for a partner,
Waiting for a partner,
So open the ring and let one in.

Now you're married you must obey,
You must be true to all you say;
You must be kind, you must be good,
And help your wife to chop the wood.
Chop it thin and carry it in,
And kiss your partner in the ring

Required: state the word.

Book 2 - October: Hunters' Moon

Hunting game is often subject to restrictions in order to protect birds and animals when they are at their most vulnerable. This is known as a closed season. Since we readers of the SRC are hunters of good books, and there's no restrictions on those, we're in open season instead!

Read a book where the author's initials can be found in OPEN SEASON. Multiple authors may be used, but all author initials must be found in the phrase. Letters may only be used as many times as they appear.

Book 3 - November: Beaver Moon

Despite being hunted to worryingly low numbers (and in some cases to local extinction), conservation and reintroduction efforts have seen beavers flourish, now being declared species of 'Least Concern' by the IUCN.

Read a book set at least 50% in one of these counties where either species of beaver can be found:

North American Beaver: USA, Canada, Mexico, Finland
Eurasian Beaver: Sweden, Germany, Austria, Romania, Denmark, Norway, Serbia, Bulgaria, Spain, England, Scotland

Required: state the country. If it is not obvious from the GR description or metadata, provide a reference to verify the setting.

Monopoly is a classic board game in which players try to collect and build as many properties as they can so they can charge their fellow players "rent." The goal is to collect 2-3 of the same color properties to create a "monopoly."

Let's bend the rules and play with books!

Roll one six-sided die to determine your reading category. Then, create your monopoly by reading three different books (total of 750+ pages) that share this connection.

Roll a 1: Author Name (first or last)
Read three books by three different authors who share the same first or last name. Spelling must match exactly. The name of all 3 authors must be in the same position for each author.

Roll a 2: Word in the title
Read three books whose titles share a common word of 4 or more letters. Words must match exactly. Plurals and possessives do not count.
Required: State the word

Roll a 3: Cover Color
Read three books whose covers are made up at least 50% of the same color according to Tineye
Required: Post the covers

Roll a 4: MPG
Read three books that share the same MPG. Genre can be standalone or embedded, but must match exactly.
Required: State the MPG

Roll a 5: Setting
Read three books that are set in the same country. If setting is not obvious according to GR description or metadata, provide a reference.
Required: State the setting

Roll a 6: Year of publication
Read three books that were all published in the same year according to GR metadata.
Required: State the year

50.1 Wanna Know What You're Playing For?
Two of my favorite reality TV shows are Survivor and Big Brother, where individuals compete for a cash prize, one on an island and the other in a house.
Big Brother is a full summer experience with following the regular televised show three times a week, watching 24/7 live feeds and reading updates/ opinions on Reddit as well as listening to podcasts dedicated to the goings on in the house. They are currently finishing up their 24 season and will crown a winner on September 25th after spending 82 days in the house.
Survivor is broadcasted twice yearly and will be airing their 43rd season starting September 21st. The show only airs once a week and the time on the island is now 26 days as opposed to the original 39 days due to covid restrictions.
There are three components of the game that fans and jury members will debate/discuss for each individual person’s game: strategic game, competition wins, and social game. Survivor's jury typically chooses between three survivors (two in earlier seasons) and two houseguests in Big Brother. My task is based on these three components.
Choose one option from each component:

Strategy- This involves the player's positioning/ situational awareness in the game as well as making internal game-based decisions that will get you further in the game (aka not voted out). Some of the best players are able to pivot when an alliance or relationship is no longer working and are able to get out of near impossible situations. Producers also like to throw a lot of twists in the game, so players need to be able to maneuver around them.
Pick one option:
Option 1. Read a book with one of the words that is similar to position in the title (excluding subtitles): Put, Place, Locate, Situate, Set, Site, Stand, Station, Lay, Lie, Rest, Prop, Plant, Stick, Install, Settle, Arrange, Dispose, Array, Range, Orient, Park, or Deploy. Word must match exactly.

Option 2: Read a book whose author that shares the initials of one of the best strategic players of Survivor or Big Brother according to the fandom (not using full names as to not spoil anyone).
VR, DG, SD, RM, DL, WK, KS, JC, TM, DR, PS, RH, TC, JP, CF, DS, AH, JS, TH, TA, ES, PA, NA, RC, TV, SL, YK, BH, AK, AB, KW, or RH.
For example: JP/ Jodi Picoult
CF/ Carley Fortune

Competitions- Both shows consist of competitions that give the players safety, rewards, or power in the game. Survivor players play for rewards (usually food or shelter) or for tribal immunity/ individual immunity. All seasons start off the game in tribes (usually two or three tribes) and the winner of immunity is exempt from going to tribal council where all of their members are safe from a vote. Once the game is halfway done, the remaining tribes merge into one tribe where individual immunity is up for grabs. The person that wins this is the only safe person when they go to tribal council. Big Brother houseguests play for Head of Household, where that winner chooses the two nominees for eviction. Power of Veto allows the winner to keep nominations the same or remove someone from the block. If the POV is used, the HOH will decide on the replacement nominee. At the end of the week, the remaining houseguests will vote out one of the nominees. The nominees do not vote and the HOH only votes in the event of a tie.

Choose one option:
Option 1: Read a book whose title contains a word of 4 or more letters that can be made from the letters in: HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD, POWER OF VETO, and IMMUNITY.

Option 2: Read a book that has won the Goodreads Choice Awards from any year that meets all the SRC requirements: https://www.goodreads.com/choiceaward...

Social- One of the biggest deciders of whether the jury wants to give the money to a player depends on their social game. Are they well liked? Did they put in the work to get to know the other players on a personal level? When they voted them out of the house or game, did they feel good (good jury management)? Also, during jury questioning, are they owning their game or are they making excuses.

Choose one option:
Option 1: Relationships and connections are probably the most important aspect of these social based games. There have been many deeper connections that have resulted in long term relationships and marriages. Also because of the experience, most of the cast continues to be friends outside the house/ island. Read a book with the MPG of Friends, Relationships, Marriage or Family.

Option 2: Many of us will continue to read authors that we rated highly or relate to in some way. Read a book by an author you have previously given a 5- star rating to.

Darkness & Light
The nights are drawing in here in the Northern Hemisphere and it's getting darker, but in the Southern hemisphere the nights are getting lighter. This is a 3 book challenge. Read one from each option

1: Darkness
1a) Read a book with the work DARK intact in the title, subtitle or author's name
OR
2a) Read a book with a cover that is more than 50% black according to TinEye. Post the cover.

2:Light
2a) Read a book with the word LIGHT intact in the title, subtitle or author's name
OR
2b) In honour of the festivals of light that occur at this time of year, read a book with a lit candle, a lit lantern, a fire torch or fireworks on the cover (a table lamp, flashlight or light fitting will not count). Post the cover.

2: Forwards & Backwards
Many people will soon change our clocks - either forwards or backwards, into or out of Daylight Saving/Summer time
3a) Read a book with the word TIME intact in the title, subtitle or author's name
OR
3b) Read a book with at least one clock/watch/timepiece visible on the cover - the clock/watch/timepiece MUST show the dial with a time shown. A digital timepiece is acceptable as long as a time is showing. Post the cover.
