Dusted off my copy and I'm ready to go Oct 1. I find something new every year when I read it.
Loved this last year might as well do it again.
This will be my third year. It's always fun.

Prologue starts tomorrow! ^_^(I'm still not sure if I want to reread this year, but I might at least read the prologue and see if I feel like it.)

Read the prologue and the previous daily read notes up to Oct 1.It is good to meet Snuff again.
Enjoyed Snuff telling about his meeting with old watchdog at the grave yard, particularly the teeth showing comparison. After Snuff shows his teeth the watchdog says " perhaps it's alright" and asks for a bone. Is he intimidated by Snuff's teeth?
The dedication list is always impressive. The drawing for the prologue is weird. Is that a dog?
I’ve just read the prologue and found some old notes too. It’s clear that I have more information each time. I think it is a subtle intimidation with the theeth.
"A Night in the Lonesome October" daily read was my first book club activity after a year or so of lurking :) It was in 2019.
I wonder if reading Dracula at the same time will give me a new perspective.

I have read the prologue and the first chapter because it is 1st October here in Sydney. So nice to get back with Snuff and all the Things he has to guard.
Finished chapter 1. In the character ID I think #20 is Snuff
As Snuff makes the rounds of the things in the house they all try to bribe or intimidate him into letting them go. With the Things in the mirrors he shows his teeth and they writhed away. His teeth must be pretty impressive because they influenced the behavior of the graveyard watch dog in the prologue too.

October 1Ahh there are so many interesting things still there for me to figure out. I have my previous theories about Things in the Mirrors and Thing in the Wardrobe but I still have nothing about Thing in the Circle and the Thing in a Trunk.

October 2I love reading about Snuff and Grey. I wonder what was the other killing.
October 3“As I made my way back I felt that I was being watched. But whoever it was, was very, very good.” Hmmm, who was that? I didn’t pay attention to this fragment before. I have some ideas. Could it be my favorite character?
So Snuff got close enough to be able to tell Jill's broom was warm from use. So he walked right up to the back door.The cover:

Chapter 4Calling a male dog an SOB is not an insult but a statement of fact.
Snuff found a large paw print in the yard. Is it related to who was following him in chapter 3.
We meet Cheeter the squirrel. I wonder if he could be a cheater? As usual I'm puzzled by his master gathering mistletoe with a sickle. Did he have a ladder too since it is typically very high in trees. The tool pictured in the cover photo does appear to be a scythe

Left my book out on the end table last night and my cat bit a hole in the cover.
Finished chapter 5.Graymalk tells Snuff about a killing in town apparently my a vicious dog. Snuff says it wasn't him. This will make people wary and the streets better controlled. (view spoiler)

Chapter 6The slithers crack the mirror they are in. Jack uses his mundane wand to transfer them to another mirror. I looked up the definition of mundane:
adjective

similar: uninteresting, uneventful, unremarkable, ordinary, commonplace
2.of this earthly world rather than a heavenly or spiritual one.

So I'm wondering if this is a different wand than the one Jack used in chapter 4 to chapter the beam of star light.

October 7Enter one of my favorite characters Bubo the rat. #21 in cover photo.
After the chimes of midnight cease Snuff has the ability to speech and has a conversation with Jack.

Chapter 8Jack and Snuff get a visit from Larry Talbot. Snuff will not let him touch him and his smell had an underlying wildness.
Enjoyed Jim's 2019 notes about the 1941 Wolfman movie and werewolf lore.
The Great Detective meets Larry Talbot and Jack and Snuff while they are out at night. He asks each for a light for his pipe. Jack produces a package of wax vestas. I had to refresh my memory on vestas. Ended up on a tangent reading about the history of matches and how it revolutionized the ability and ease of starting a fire.
Yeah it helps a lot if you're a fan of the Classic Universal Monster Movies and know who Larry Talbot is :)
Chapter 10Snuff rolls in the water to keep it from getting to circle holding the thing. I've never had a dog that would get wet on purpose.
Snuff meets the Count and plays the part of a friendly dog again.

October 11,I love Snuff. I can just imagine everyone's surprise when Morris and McCab open the door and the detective and his companion are standing there expecting Jack.
October 12,Jack read the paper aloud. From the articles he read it could have been todays paper he was reading.

How spoilers work in this thread: After it's October 1st in the Goodreads time zone, you can post open spoilers about the October 1st chapter. If it's already October 2nd in the GR time zone, and you haven't read the October 2nd chapter yet, don't read new posts that pop up. No spoiler tags needed, but never post about a chapter that's still in the future.
About reading the previous years' threads: If you want to read the discussions from the older threads, you can safely start reading from the beginning. Stop when you get to September 30th if you haven't read the prologue yet. Please note: Do not open the spoiler tags in msg #3 of old threads! Instead look at msg #3 of this thread, the one you're in now :)
The system is the same as this year. Open spoilers allowed after midnight Goodreads time. So you can safely read all comments with the date October 1st once you've read chapter 1, and so on.
Jim's notes: The "Chapters and pages" section in message #2 of this thread lists how many pages each chapter is, and links to Jim's notes for that day from 2019. Jim has read this book several times, and he has excellent notes on each day's happenings. There are no spoilers for things to come, just what has happened up to that point. You should definitely read the notes after reading each day's chapter! The notes were posted the day after, so if you don't want spoilers, only read the notes post, because the very next one might already discuss the next day's chapter!
