Alexander Caskie | 13 comments Fantasy Series where the world is shattered to islands, boy trained by three necklaces containing spirits specialising in warfare, hand to hand combat and weapons. I mainly remember some of the first book, but this series is at least a trilogy.

These necklaces are forced on him by a Warlord overtaking his village, to see what the combination of all three necklaces would do to a person, as usually one necklace is used a t a time. The wearer is trained by each spirit in their respective disciplines in their dreams. They train the boy to escape, and eventually he does. The warlord has worn each necklace, and one of his retainers has worn one, making them extremely deadly fighters.

My memory fails me then I remember reading that he sleepwalks while on a boat away from the island he lived on, and walked along the banister of the boat like a tightrope walker.

Eventually the boy becomes a royal guard/bodyguard of the princess I think?

Much later, in a later book, there is an expedition, involving a full scale war against some monstrous beings, in the mountains, I forget what the enemies were. There’s smaller humanoid ones, beast ones and possibly giant humanoid ones, with different capitalised names for them.

During this expedition, the warlord and the boy are fighting on the same side, against the monsters, despite the warlord being minorly pressing on the royal family’s influence, he still is loyal in this instance and I think dies holding a narrow gorge surrounded by enemy monstrous bodies

I remember something about Shards being a key word for this

Alexander Caskie | 13 comments I think the humanoid monsters could use bows, since I vaguely remember the warlord dying filled with arrows.

I think his title which wasn’t warlord or lord or anything, began with a K, something similar to Khal or Khan

Alexander Caskie | 13 comments I read this online, on one of the original Kindle’s which didn’t really have internet connection, only to the kindle store, so I have no idea of what the cover looked like. This was maybe 6/7/8 years ago

Alexander Caskie | 13 comments I think teens given the sorta power fantasy of powering up with the necklaces, but at times was dark enough to be adult fare.

One Goodreads reviewer says of the first book Ascension by Brian K. Fuller:

"We meet three ancient über-warriors immortalized inside the stone necklace so they can train new warriors to defend the blessed couple and their child: 1) Samian Birchwood, perhaps the kindest one, is an expert woodsman / survivalist (and Maewen's father), 2) Elberen the archer, a wise and knowledgable elf, speaking the old language and fighting an extinct hand-to-hand combat style, and 3) General Telmerran Fourtower, the boldest (and most reckless) of the three."
