It's finally October and as Anne Shirley so wisely said: "I'm so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers." Be honest- do you know anyone who doesn't like October? I mean I know plenty of people who don't like winter and summer but I've never heard anyone say they don't like fall.. I couldn't associate with someone who has those types of crazy opinions anyway 🤪.

As for this month's game I want to share a couple of things- first is that we are hurdling towards the end of the year quite fast (IMO) and I want to thank those of you who have come back month after month to participate in this little labor of love of mine- even if you only had time to take part in one round- I thank you! And to show my appreciation I am abolishing the punishment rule for the rest of the year. While I like there to be balance and consequences in games to make them more fun and to also offer more motivation to complete the challenges I also just want to have a good time- so in the spirit of reading just for the sake of it there will be no more punishment prompts for those of us that fail to complete our TBR's (like I always do haha). If you really enjoy the punishment prompts and personally want to continue on with them I will be happy to take a turn for you- just let me know!

The second thing I want to mention is the Monster Hunt challenge which is another labor of love- one I've been bringing back every year since I joined the MOD's of this cozy little reading community we've cultivated here- which was back in 2019.. how time does fly! (I'm a broken record when it comes to this but I always feel like if I blink another year is gone!) The reason I'm bringing this up is because the Monster Hunt was designed with simplicity in mind so that our group members could easily participate in the event while still taking part in the regular challenges we host every month so when choosing your books for this months prompts try to pick books that will also catch you some monsters (if you want to, of course! this is just a reminder).

One last thing is that I am considering recycling some of the card prompts since we are down to the bottom the pile. There are some prompts that I found wouldn't work well with this set up and have been putting them at the bottom of the pile here and there throughout the year so the remaining cards are limited. Considering there are 72 prompts to cycle through I think it'll be ok to reuse some of them!

As for the rules - they will remain the same otherwise with doubling up allowed as many times as possible. And don't forget to leave your TBR's below- I love to go through and see what choices you've all made!

the prompts:

Turn #1
Card: Use a "staff" and poke your shelves to choose a book ( no peeking!)
Roll: Choose from TBR veterans!

explanation: I've been loving these random "choose your books" prompts whether its with a generator or the first book you touch. For this one use an object as your staff and the first book you touch with it (while not looking!) is the book you will read for this prompt. The roll portion of this one was one of the few prompts that are specific to me so in place of that I went with choosing from a stack of TBR Vets... those books you've been meaning to read FOREVER and still haven't gotten to- we are approaching the end of another year after all so this is your chance not to drag at least one of these books with you into another year still unread!

Turn #2
Card: Reread an old favorite.
Roll: Roll again.

explanation: this is very simple and doesn't require any explanation really.. just pick up an old favorite and read it again. I always have favorites I'm planning to read again so I'm looking forward to this one. Find the extra turn for "roll again" at the end.

Turn #3
Card: Read a manga, comic, or graphic novel.
Roll: Next in a series.

explanation: Read a comic, manga, or GN thats part of a series.. the prompt says next in a series but I'll also accept the first in a series just as long as its part of one it counts.

Turn #4
Card: Read a book you've heard is weird.
Roll: ebook or audiobook.

Find an ebook or audiobook for a book you've heard described as weird or odd. Or one with a strange synopsis. Weird books are becoming more and more popular so this shouldn't be a hard prompt to complete. Let me know if you need a recommendation- I've read a lot of weird books... plus you'll need a recommendation for an upcoming prompt- get your double up game on!

Turn #5
Card: Read a book by an author that has a name that begins with either an "A" or a "B".
Roll: Hardcover.

explanation: I will accept an author's first or last name for this one- just make sure its a hardcover.

Turn #6 (roll again)
Card: A book with an animal on the cover that can be kept as a pet.
Roll: Get a recommendation.

explanation: Obviously people keep many unusual animals as pets but let's stick to traditional pets for this one. A lot of spooky books have the classic black cat on the cover so maybe thats an option- just be sure to let the person you're getting a recommendation from know which type of book you're looking to read for this one... and again please feel free to ask me- I'd be happy to give you a rec but you can also ask other group members or any other person of your choice.

For those of you who need a partial or complete turn replacement feel free to utilize the following prompts in place of the one you can't fulfill:

Card: Choose a book you think will be comforting or uplifting.
Roll: Goodreads/social media pick.

For this one choose goodreads or a social media platform that you prefer and scroll until you come upon a book on your TBR that you think will be a comforting or uplifting story.

That's it for this month- I wish you the spookiest of all reading months and I cant wait to see what choices you all make!! 👻🎃

Ooooh fun! I adore it, but it gets a lot of mixed feedback so I'd love to see what you thought of it if you get to work it in! I also saw you had Sour Candy on yours, that one was interesting too. Good luck on the TBR! Looking fun ☺️
