Carol (carolfromnc) | 3992 comments This is the thread for our December nonfiction nominations. The theme this month is Open Choice. What are you in the mood to learn about and discuss as we close out 2022?

Criteria:
1. Book must be by a female author (transwomen and women using male pseudonyms are women).
2. No books that have already been group reads within the past 3 years/36 months (check the group's bookshelf).
3. Do not nominate a book you have written or for which you are the publicist or lead marketer.
4. Consider availability. If a book is available in the US and UK (at minimum), and in paperback and ebook formats, more members can participate than if not.

To Nominate:
1. Give both the title of the book and the author's name when nominating to avoid confusion. Please use the 'add book/author' button when nominating.
2. Indicate whether you are willing or not to lead discussion if your nomination is chosen.
3. Maximum - one nomination per member.

Nominations will close October 12.

A Knock at Midnight: A Story of Hope, Justice, and Freedom by Brittany K. Barnett - Lindsey

Sounds and Sweet Airs: The Forgotten Women of Classical Music by Anna Beer - Michaela

Finding Me by Viola Davis - Carol

Carol (carolfromnc) | 3992 comments I nominate Finding Me by Viola Davis. I can lead.

I remember nominating this one some time last year, Lindsey, and would be excited for our group to read it.

I started it a few months ago and got sidetracked. But I remember really enjoying the small bit I did read.

The Viola Davis memoir looks amazing. I have it on hold through my library (but the wait is estimated at 6 months, so that might end up being a purchase!)

Thanks, Michaela — adding this above now.

Carol (carolfromnc) | 3992 comments One more day for nominations, all!

Carol (carolfromnc) | 3992 comments The poll is up! Help us select our December NF read

Carol (carolfromnc) | 3992 comments Finding Me won the Poll. Reserve your copies now and we'll see you in a few weeks!

@Michaela, you asked whether we can open multiple discussion threads. I have no objection if you want to take on setting up a thread for Sounds and Sweet Airs and leading/driving that discussion, but I won't have the capacity to manage multiple NF threads in December so wouldn't want you to feel surprised or deserted if there's not a mod supporting a second parallel conversation. It's difficult to predict the participation we'll get when we have strong voting engagement by many members who don't have a history of actively participating in discussions. History isn't predictive, of course, and we can hope that we'll see voters supporting the selections for which they voted, in some reasonable percentage. Sorry to be so long-winded.

Michaela | 422 comments Thanks for the explanations, Carol. I thought we could maybe read one after the other through the months, but understand that those most active here voted for the winner. As I always have too many books to read, I´ll not take up the idea of a second NF read this month, but thanks for proposing it. :)

I think it could be a great candidate for the buddy read thread Michaela

I vote for this one every time it is included. I'd love to read it at some point in time.

I´ll put it on the buddy read thread then, so we discuss when to read it. It´s been sitting on my shelf for a while now. :)
