Kamila After a log while, I have wandered into a realm of fantasy books again and was completely swept away by Robin Hobb´s Farseer saga. Would you recommend some other similar fantasy series while we all wait for another part of the Fitz and Fool trilogy?

I am hoping to find a series of books which are as gripping as Farseer and Tawny man trilogies and where a friendship and emotions are main parts of the story.

So far the book which seems most similar to Elderlings to me, is The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. Do you have any other recommendations?

Jon You nailed it with your first choice. After that I would suggest Melanie Rawn's unfinished Exiles trilogy (we may never see the third installment but the first two, Ruins of Ambrai and The Mageborn Traitor, are so worth it) or her two Dragon trilogies (Dragon Prince & Dragon Star).

Kamila Thank you, Jon. I will definitely try them (I am already looking forward to some new exciting read!)

Raptori If you haven't yet, it's worth checking out Brandon Sanderson's work. He doesn't have the prose quality or character depth of Hobb in my opinion, but makes up for it through brilliant worldbuilding and good plots. Plus there's a very clear improvement in his writing as time goes on :)

Bryan Maybe try the Memory, Sorrow, And Thorn series by Tad Williams. The first book is The Dragonbone Chair.

Kamila Wow, that´s great - my reading list is growing! Thank you so much for recommendations, Raptori and Bryan!

Raptori You're welcome! Also, if you haven't read Hobb's Liveship Traders trilogy then you're missing out. They're very different to the books that focus on Fitz (for example they're third person perspective), but they're absolutely brilliant.

Kamila Thank you, Ross, I am already looking forward to reading both of them!

Ted Williams Want to read a kick ass, knock yer socks off, cheer and cry epic beyond belief series? Read Steven Erickson's "Malazan Books of the Fallen". Hands down one of the top five original stories I've read in 50 yrs! (and I've read most of 'em!) On a par with another great, now classic, "The Chronicles of the Black Company" by Glen Cook! Make the time, you won't be disappointed!

Robin Hobb is hard to top when it come to fantasy. I too am reading Name of the Wind and like it so far. For fantasy I've enjoyed these series and authors.
The Shannara series by Terry Brooks
A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin
Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson
Other favorite fantasy authors to check out possibly aer...
Diana Wynne Jones, R.A. Salvatore, Brent Weeks :)

Felix A Crown for Cold Silver

I'm halfway through & it's wonderful. Alex Marshall is a pseudonym for a well known author in another genre. I wonder who it is? I highly recommend this book!

Kamila Thank you very much for all the recommendations! :) So far I have read the first book of Mistborn and although the writing was very enjoyable, I found out that I do not care for the metal-burning magical system very much. I am lucky you all have recommended so many other books to try!

Jon Thought of a couple more: Magicians trilogy by Lev Grossman fits the bill exactly, and a series that's just a well written fantasy (but not kids/school) is the Dubric Byerly mysteries (three novels with the fourth in the works, starts with Ghosts in the Snow) by Tamara Siler-Jones. Think grimdark fantasy meets post-apocalypse world ala Terry Brooks' Shannara, with a twist of CSI-type mystery/procedural.

Ted Williams I don't understand why Robert V S Redick's: Chathrand Voyage(4 vol.) is overlooked! It is recent, well written, expansive and is appreciatively lacking the formulaic trophes of most contemporary fantasy!! Its got seafaring w/o 'swashing', love w/o mush and porn, world building and a back story that boggles. Oh yeah! and characters(human and non) that live and breathe long after the last sentence, I know it was pub'd in Eng. and took awhile to show here, but again its such a stellar story, especially for an author's 1st outting, I don't get the lack of attention!!!

Anne Monteith Robin Hobb is working on a new series with Fitz and Fool as the primary characters. I loved the first book and am waiting for the second which will be out soon. Although many of those who enjoyed her Farseer/ Tawny Man and even the Liveship Traders series did not like the Rain Wild books, I did. I even enjoyed the Soldier Son Trilogy, but it is very, very different from her other series.
Kate Elliot has 7 books out in the Crown and Star series.
Terry Goodkind has several books out in the Sword of Truth Series, the last one is due to be releases soon.
I really liked the first book in David Hair's Moontide Quartert series. I am waiting for the final of the 4 to be released because they are published oversea first which makes an even longer time between books and I like to be able to read books without having to wait and wait; then try to remember the details or speed reading through the previous books again. I mean how long have we been waiting for the last book in Cronin's Passages trilogy and how many more centuries will we wait?
However, Peter V. Brett's gives a recap at the beginning of each book in his Demon Cycle Series. There are four books out, with 5 or 6 scheduled and a few books with short stories that he's released that were cut from the books that are out. I really love this series, but I've enjoyed all the ones I've mentioned.
