Ian Miller | 366 comments This is a sort of call for help in case someone has solved this problem. I have an EIN and I live outside the US. When I try to fill out the Amazon tax interview and put in my EIN number, then say I do not have an office in the US the form tells me I need an ITIN to fill out W-8BEN, but last time, following IRS instructions, I used W-8BEN-E. The Amazon interview process does not seem to recognize this, I have contacted them for help many times and get nowhere. They keep saying, fill out the form, but it stalls at that point. I have sent them screen shots of the stall, but tp no avail so I am asking whether anyone else has had this problem and knows what to do.

For what it is worth, Smashwords also uses a similar interview, and I got through that effortlessly

Ian Bott (iansbott) | 269 comments I don't have anything to offer because I've not (yet) had that problem. I also live outside the US and have an EIN.

But I'm 90% sure I've not actually had to use the EIN for several years now. If I recall correctly, both Amazon and Smashwords these days asked for the relevant tax identification number for the country I'm in, which in Canada is the Social Insurance Number.

Here's hoping they've not "improved" their system since last time I had to update my tax details.

I'm in the same box as Ian, I just used the Tax ID from my country.

Ian Miller | 366 comments Success! Thanks for the clue - Your own country's TIN seems to be sufficient. It was irrelevant and much fuss was made of having to have a US TIN when I started publishing, but the tax law seems to have changed. Hopefully it stays this way.
