LTJ (ltj81) | 379 comments @Emily: Hey! I’d say…

Misery
‘Salem’s Lot
IT
The Shining
Cujo

Happy reading!

Nick Iuppa | 4272 comments I agree with LTJ, but since you're a YA fanatic you might also consider CHRISTINE. It is dated, but the characters are great and the relationship between the high school kids is very well done. After that - The Shining, Salem's Lot, IT, Misery, and maybe Duma Key.

Daniele (danielezan) | 24 comments If you really liked the books you read, my recommadation is that you start from Carrie (the first King published) and then you read his books in a chronological order. There are quite many recalls/citations from previous books as you go along.

Ana Almeida (almeidalivros) | 3 comments Night shadows os so good, if you want something longer, I mean really long, than maybe The Stand

message 8: by Oswen (new)

Oswen Konno I highly recommend you to start with Carrie, his first published book. It's short but very intense and interesting.

Squire (srboone) | 92 comments I would also recommend Carrie. His first published novel, but structured like none of his other books. He's still trying to find his voice. Then, any of his other books pre-1990. One thing that will do for you is show you his horror roots. His output these days are more homages to writers he liked growing up (such as John D. McDonald). A lot of people new to King don't get a primer on the writer he was, compared to writer King today.

Lee Cushing | 9 comments Needful Things
Stephen King is a very good author of horror fiction; perhaps the best horror writer of all time, depending on your of view., he have annoying quirk of having fantastically thought-out plots, imaginative settings, engaging characters, then ruining them with limp endings that don't live to the readers' expectations.

premise offul Things is remarkably simple and a new take on the "making deal with the devil" scenario. Leland Gaunt, a seemingly demonic being, is the charming charismatic proprietor of the new store, Needful Things, which has everybody talking. The store seems to sell something for everyone in town, and at a very affordable price too,... there's a catch; if you the item, your Needful, badly enough, you have to make an additional of a little prank Gaunt seems to know and exploit the various townspeople'sices one another, and before you know it, tensions have reached a boiling point.

Jakob Shingler | 35 comments Hi! As a big fan of Stephen King, I began by reading Carrie and The Shining. To go with what others have said, those are always good beginners though I would also suggest The Dead Zone and Firestarter. Both very gripping novels and two of his works that get over looked, in my opinion.
