30.3 - Robin (Saturndoo)'s Task: The Importance of December 7th

December 7th is known for several significant reasons. On December 7, 1941 the Imperial Japanese Navy attacked US forces at Pearl Harbor and other locations in Hawaii. This attack immediately brought the US into WWII by declaring war on Japan. On this day, please remember to fly your US flag(s) at half mast in honor and remembrance of the service members and civilians that were killed in this unprovoked attack. December 7th is also National Letter Writing day. With today's technology, I do miss going to the mailbox and finding a letter from a loved one. This day has another important meaning to me, in that, it is my oldest son's birthday. Happy Birthday Jason!

Read two books, one each from 2 different options. REQUIRED: State the options you used. ONE graphic novel may be used.

Option 1: Ultrasounds verified I was having a boy. My doctor was adamant that if the baby was a girl it would be named Pearl. He loved joking me about this because he knew I was dead set on a boy that would be named "Jason."

Read a book by an author whose first, middle or last name is Pearl. Hyphenated names are permissible, but no other variations.
e.g: Pearl S. Buck, Matthew Pearl, Pearl Cleage, Nancy Pearl, Stephanie Pearl-McPhee

Option 2: Have a sweet tooth? December 7th is National Cotton Candy Day! Dig in and enjoy!

Read a book with the word "COTTON" or "CANDY" in the title or subtitle. EXACT match only -no plurals or possessives.

e.g: A Day to Pick Your Own Cotton, The Candy House, The Summer of Cotton Candy.

Option 3: Jessie James became well known on December 7,1869 when he robbed the Daviess County Savings Bank in Gallatin Missouri.

Read a book with the MPG of True Crime. Genre may be embedded.

Option 4: December 7th is National Letter Writing Day. If you can't celebrate by writing a letter, enjoy reading an epistolary novel : )

Read a book from the following list: Epistolary Novels Books
REQUIRED: State the page on which your book is found

Option 5: This year is the 81st Commemoration of Pearl Harbor and Jason's 32nd birthday. A "49" year difference. Those two numbers are also in the year,1941, that the attack occurred.

Read a book with a page count that contains a "4" AND a "9"

Option 6: The attack on Pearl Harbor is an important historic event. It was the catalyst that brought the US into WWII and helped the Allies achieve victory. A favorite genre of Jason's is WWII historical fiction.

Read a book from this list: WWII Historic Fiction
REQUIRED: State the page on which your book is found.

Robin P | 1609 comments Many of the books on the Epistolary list aren't actually that, they are memoirs, or first-person narratives, or just regular novels with some letters in them. Strictly speaking an epistolary novel would be all in letters/emails/texts, etc. But since it's a list prompt, we just have to read something on the list, correct?

Yes, read something from the list. I noticed that as well about some of the books on the list but at least some of the novels do include letters and that is ok : )

It's noted : ) I hope you enjoy it! I've had this on my TBR for a long time maybe I should read it for my own task LOL

Chandni (chandnin31) | 507 comments Haha yes you should! I'm not sure yet whether I'll listen to it on audio or borrow a copy from the library. I've heard very good things about it.

Jessica (bookwrm526) | 2106 comments For the option where the author's name is Pearl, does the book have to have a single author? I would like to read Oscar Micheaux and His Circle: African-American Filmmaking and Race Cinema of the Silent Era but it has three authors listed.

These are the default rules. Pearl Bowser is showing as an editor instead of author. Also under rule #8, unless specified by task creator, it's single author only. Sorry, but that book won't work.

7. Do illustrators and translators count as authors for SRC purposes?
No. Only authors that are identified as authors (or a default blank in the author role field), co-authors, or contributors are considered authors in tasks involving author information. Other roles or functions such as editor, illustrator, artist, translator, introduction, designed by, foreword, preface, assistant or afterword are not considered authors for author-sourced tasks. Ask about other roles identified in a Goodreads record in the season's General Questions help thread.

8. What if a book has multiple authors in a task involving author names, initials, or other characteristics (gender, birthplace, etc.)?
The general default rule is that books by a single author must be used. This can be varied by the task creator until task becomes final. A single author is an individual Goodreads record of an author. This name may represent a single writer or a pseudonym for a team of writing partners, if the name listed on Goodreads is an individual name. If two names are listed, but one is a pseudonym for the other, this is still a single author.

I figured, but I thought it was worth asking :) I'll find somewhere else to put it.

message 17: by Amy (new)

Amy | 2170 comments The book I'll Be Seeing You appears on page 4 of the Epistolary list for option 4. When I looked at its different editions I noticed that it is also called Home Front Girls. The version available for download on audio is the latter. Am I okay with the alternate title since it isn't on the epistolary list under that name? I don't want to cause confusion for the mods (or end up on the problem list).

Robin (Saturndoo) (robinsaturndoo) Absolutely you can!!! It's the same story, just an alternate title. I will put the book(both titles) in the approved list above.

NancyJ (nancyjjj) For Option 5, Page count with a 4 and 9: Do we have to check the MMP pages, or does that only apply to ebooks or audios?

Robin (Saturndoo) (robinsaturndoo) NancyJ wrote: "For Option 5, Page count with a 4 and 9: Do we have to check the MMP pages, or does that only apply to ebooks or audios?"

Hi Nancy!! This is the SRC rules that apply to page counts : )

7. When determining page count, you should go by the copy you read- EXCEPT as noted below for ebooks, audiobooks, and large print books. Therefore, if you obtain (own, borrow, check out from the library, etc.) the hardback edition, use the page count for the hardback edition. If you obtain the paperback edition, use that page count.

If you read an ebook, or audiobook use the page count for the mass market paperback if one exists. If there is no mass market paperback edition, use the paperback edition and if no paperback is available use the hardcover edition.
