Jan McCleery | 17 comments It made me think of Tinkerbell when she told Peter Pan, "You know that place between sleep and awake, that place where you still remember dreaming? ... That's where I'll be waiting." Because that's where/when ideas pop into my head for new books, characters, etc. Between sleep and awake. Anyone else?

Nov. 3 as a liberal, worried about America after Roe v Wade and far-right threats to end contraception, a dystopian scenario came into my head. I'd love it if anyone would like to read a beta version of the short story, "The Draft," and let me know what you think. Or just the synopsis.

The intro and pitch I'm working on is (feedback if you like them would also be appreciated):

THE DRAFT Genre: Dystopian science fiction short story Words: 14,000 by Jan McCleery
A future America where babies are gestated in incubators and the American man’s role is forever altered.

Pitch: Why do Tim and George fear January 13th? The world is turned upside down in 2067. It all started in 2022 when Roe v Wade was overturned and Republican men took over both houses of Congress. Two years later, ex-President White returned to power. America isolated. White's Wall was built and all immigration halted. A total ban on abortions and contraception was imposed and women were “encouraged" to have babies to create the labor force that used to come from immigration. Poor women, no more than chattel, moved to migrant camps as laborers or hotels as servants. Modern-day slavery was born. But a life-changing invention sets women free. Unshackled from their wombs, women rise in power. Eventually, the men of America learn what "Equality" really means.

Ville Kokko | 52 comments That sounds like something After Dinner Conversation magazine might be interested in publishing, if you don't mind getting merely nominal payment. Good luck with the story, anyway.
