The rules say "Spell one". There are shorter words and longer ones, the longest one (Sense and sensibility) has 19 letters. The idea was that if you want to reach higher levels you can't get more than 19 points by reading JA not related books. So I would say no. Sorry.

Stormie ~ Book Dragon ~ (stormiebookdragon) | 273 comments I watched Mansfield Park last night (03/14), on Netflix. Then, Sense and Sensibility. It was after midnight by the time it was over, so I just put both dates on there. ;) I loved both of those movies! There were parts in both that made me cry. Johnny Lee Miller in Mansfield Park and Alan Rickman in Sense and Sensibility! Two of my favorite actors!

Stormie ~ Book Dragon ~ (stormiebookdragon) | 273 comments I just have a question...on the spell-it-out section, do those novels have to be JA related or can they be anything? I found a page on Goodreads https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/... that looks really promising for finding sequels. But do we count those in there or what? Since the sequel is another section of the challenge?

message 23: by Dani (new)

Dani (yogidani) | 181 comments If yall like the movies, you should check out the 1940 P&P with Greer Garson and Laurence Olivier. It doesn't totally follow the book and leaves out a few scenes, but it's good. I grew up with that movie and didn't even realize half of what actually happens until I read the book. Still, it's a very cute movie.

message 24: by Zuzana (last edited Mar 05, 2015 11:30AM) (new)

Zuzana | 2568 comments Stormie,

you can use any books for the spell-it-out section, they don't have to be JA related.

Sequels belong to the Sequels & Re-tellings category but if they're both set in the Regency era and the hero or the heroine are English you can put them in the Setting category. It's your choice.

P.S. If you like Johnny Lee Miller, you'll love the 2009 BBC mini-series Emma. He's playing Mr Knightley.

Zuzana | 2568 comments Dani, I've watched this one a while ago and I thought that Olivier made a very charming and playful Mr Darcy. The costuming was dreadful and totally wrong though, it looked like they used costumes from Gone with the wind.

That list is awesome Zuzana! I think I may 'borrow' it and see how many I can watch during the year. I didn't realize there were so many! It looks like 1995, 2007 and 2008 were the years of Jane Austen. :)

And I agree with you about the 1940 P&P. I just adore Olivier in that movie. I'll have to pay attention to the wardrobe when I watch it again. The last time I saw it, I was a kid and didn't notice those things. haha.

To complete the list here are some adaptations from my Amazon wish list (hopefully my family will take the hint and I'll get some of these for my birthday and for Christmas :D )

Pride and Prejudice (1980 Mini-series - Elizabeth Garvie, David Rintoul)
Death Comes to Pemberley (2013 Mini-series - Anna Maxwell Martin, Matthew Rhys)
Persuasion (1971 Mini-Series - Ann Firbank, Bryan Marshall, Marian Spencer, Richard Vernon)

Zuzana | 2568 comments On Saturday I watched the 1980 BBC mini-series Pride and Prejudice starring Elizabeth Garvie and David Rintoul. I found it on YouTube.

IMO this adaptation stayed most true to the book. It's 5 episodes so enough time to explore all of the characters and relationships. What other adaptations often omit and this one did particularly well is the character of Charlotte and her friendship with Elizabeth. You can see why these two would be such good friends. Elizabeth is as charming and witty (and as blind to the faults of her family members) as she should be. Mr Darcy is very stiff and it's very easy to misinterpret his behaviour as haughtiness. I was surprised how much I liked this series. Recommended to all who love their adaptations as true to the book as possible.

Zuzana posted a good reference here. It's movies, but some of the adaptations may also be books. I know there's also Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and apparently from what I just saw when I searched.... Pride and Prejudice and Vampires (tho this one seems to be written more for humour than actual quality of writing).

Also....does anyone know where Becoming Jane Austen would fit? It's not an actual JA work, it's technically about her, not her characters, and it's not non-fiction. Should it just be used in Spell it Out?

message 43: by Zuzana (new)

Zuzana | 2568 comments Dani, the book Becoming Jane Austen by Jon Spence is listed as a non-fiction (biography), as such it would fit the best into the Plain Facts category. But that's just my opinion. You can use it for the Spell-it-out or the Setting tasks as well. :)

The movie Becoming Jane based on this book goes into the Adaptation category (Adaptations: "Watch a movie or a TV show based on a JA book or her life.".

To find a movie/TV show set in the Regency era with an English hero isn't that easy, is it?

Gaskell and Dickens books (and adaptations) are mostly set in the Victorian times, not the Regency era. So BBC's North and South, Cranford (both are great series BTW), Little Dorrit, Bleak House, the many adaptations of Great Expectations don't fit the bill.

BTW Are there any adaptations based on A Tale of Two Cities? It's set during the French Revolution and one of the main characters Sydney Carton is an Englishman. So that one would be fine.

Movies/TV shows for the Setting category, Off the top of my head :

EDIT:
That Hamilton Woman (1941 - Laurence Olivier, Vivien Leigh) - loved that one, it's about Emma Hamilton and Admiral Nelson
Captain Horatio Hornblower R.N. (1951 - Gregory Peck)
H.M.S. Defiant (1962 - Alec Guinness and Dirk Bogarde)
Mutiny on the Bounty (1962 - Marlon Brando)
The Scarlet Pimpernel (1982 - Anthony Andrews, Jane Seymour, Ian McKellen)
The Bounty (1984 - Mel Gibson)
Gothic (1986 - Gabriel Byrne)
Rowing With the Wind (1988 - Hugh Grant)
The Deceivers (1988 - Pierce Brosnan)
Sharpe (1993-1997, 2004 series of TV movies - Sean Bean)
The Madness of King George (1994 - Nigel Hawthorne, Helen Mirren, Rupert Graves)
Princess Caraboo (1994 - Jim Broadbent, Kevin Kline, John Lithgow)
Hornblower (1998-2003 series of TV movies - Ioan Gruffudd)
The Scarlet Pimpernel (1999 Mini-series - Richard E. Grant, Elizabeth McGovern)
Byron (2003 - Jonny Lee Miller)
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003 - Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany)
Vanity Fair (2004 - Reese Witherspoon)
To the Ends of the Earth (2005 Mini-series - Benedict Cumberbatch)
Amazing Grace (2006 - Ioan Gruffudd)
Beau Brummell: This Charming Man (2006 - James Purefoy)
The Duchess (2008 - Keira Knightley)
Bright Star (2009 - Ben Whishaw)

Any other suggestions?
