Karen | 108 comments I did it for the first time in 2021 and think I can do it in 2022 too so I will be bold for 2023. Although if I suddenly start reading small romance novels in December we will know why!

Good luck to everyone participating in Mount TBR 2023.

Karen | 108 comments I am not planning to do as many challenges this year as I found it a little stressful last year.

I am doing:
- Mount TBR
- Virtual TBR
- Partner challenge - need to read Baltasar and Blimunda by José Saramago, The amorous history of the Gauls by Roger de Rabutin, Count de Bussy and a book by George MacDonald whose title I have currently forgotten. (the first two will count for this challenge, the last for Virtual TBR).
- A book a month for the 1001 group's TBR Takedown
- 160 books on the 2023 Goodreads Reading Challenge

I also want to read all 28 books in the YA series I acquired last year (Making Out).

I also hope to re-read any books that any of my groups on GR pick in order to further my goal of adding all the books I have read to GR. I also want to take part in more readathons etc.

I have also picked 23 books that I would really like to get to - we shall see!

Books I need to read in January:

-The Rainbow by D.H. Lawrence (1001 challenge)
-Stone Blind by Natalie Haynes (Virtual TBR - unable to renew from library)
-It Happened One Summer by Tessa Bailey (Virtual TBR - unable to renew from library)

Books I want to read in January:

-Clarissa by Samuel Richardson (re-read picked by group as annual read - will count for this challenge)
-H(a)ppy by Nicola Barker - will count for this challenge)
-The Birds Fall Down by Rebecca West (2023 randomiser - Virtual TBR)
-A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway (Booktube readathon - Virtual TBR)

Karen | 108 comments 1. The Sunne in Splendour by Sharon Penman. The Sunne in Splendour by Sharon Kay Penman

5 stars. I wish I found time to re-read my favourite books more often. I had wondered if time would blunt the impact of this one as I first read it as a teenager and had not read it since I was in my late twenties. No. The writing is exceptional and the story is as emotionally devastating as ever. Still an absolute favourite of mine.

On TBR since ? I definitely read it before I started university. I would guess I bought and read it when I was aged between 14 and 16.

Karen | 108 comments 3. There Is No Devil by Sophie Lark. There Is No Devil (Sinners Duet, #2) by Sophie Lark

4 stars. The sequel to the above. The writing flowed really well but much of the tension was missing that was in the first book. To be honest there was not enough of the rival serial killer in this one.

On Kindle TBR since 26/01/2022.

Karen | 108 comments 4. A Deal with the Elf King by Elise Kova. A Deal with the Elf King (Married to Magic, #1) by Elise Kova

5 stars. I am surprised I loved this so much.

On Kindle TBR since 08/11/2022.

5. Women in Dark Age and Early Medieval Europe c.500 - 1200 by Helen M. Jewell. Women in Dark Age and Early Medieval Europe c.500 - 1200 by Helen M. Jewell

4 stars. I love almost any book about women in the Medieval period. This is a very thin textbook and covers a wide period but it inspired me to buy a book about women in Norse society because, strangely, this was the part that interested me in the book the most. I prefer her sequel to this book about women in Later Medieval Europe though.

On TBR since 27/07/2022.

4 stars. I would never have picked this up if it was not on the 1001 reading challenge and was picked for a group read. It will probably be the weirdest book I read this year. Recommended for people who like dystopian fiction.

On TBR since 03/12/2022.

On TBR since ? I am not sure if I bought it when it came out in 2016. I suspect I bought it in 2018 and read it fairly straight away.

JANUARY READS

I read the 3 books I needed to read. Of the others, I have begun my re-read of Clarissa. I never expected to finish it in January so am not surprised it has not been completed. I read H(a)ppy which was great. The Rebecca West came a little late in the month from the library and I ran out of time with the Hemingway. I decided to take part in a couple of romance readathons and read Bliss and The Frat Boy for these; I didn't love either sadly. But I may have found a new favourite series - eagerly awaiting the remaining 3 installments from Jaymin Eve and Tate James as I loved Poison Roses.

Books I need to read in February:

-Pereira Maintains by Antonio Tabucchi (1001 challenge)
-Darling by India Knight (Virtual TBR - unable to renew from library)
-The Stolen Heir by Holly Black (Virtual TBR - unable to renew from library)
-Once there was a War by John Steinbeck (Virtual TBR - unable to renew from library)

Books I want to read in February:

-Carrying over Clarissa, A Farewell to Arms and The Birds Fall Down
-Aristotle and Dante dive into the waters of the world by Benjamin Alire Sáenz (Attempting to read all my library books when they get to 12 renewals)
-1 of the following if possible - The 39 Steps by John Buchan, If on a Winter's Night a Traveler by Italo Calvino or Mrs Palfrey at the Claremont by Elizabeth Taylor.
-Dirty Crazy Bad by Siobhan Davis (Readathon)

-Dirty Truths by Jaymin Eve and Tate James (New release)
-Dare to Break by L. Ann (New Release)

4 stars. Continuing my YA series readalong this was a really strong entry. And I may have read it before, I am not sure. It was creative with a quiz linking chapters together and am amusing chapter about the long drive from Maine to Vermont, where our characters are visiting a ski resort. Annoyed with Ben and Nina and their lack of communication and Lucas, stop being an a**e. Enjoyed Claire in this book and how Ben is in the only one who sussed her out.

Karen | 108 comments 37. Broken Fae by Caroline Peckham & Susanne Valenti. Broken Fae (Ruthless Boys of the Zodiac, #4) by Caroline Peckham

Karen | 108 comments 39. Aisha Goes Wild by Katherine Applegate. Aisha Goes Wild (Making Out, #8) by Katherine Applegate

4 stars. Definitely the weakest in the series so far. It gets its fourth star because the Nina and Ben storyline made me laugh. This really only deserves a 3 though.

Karen | 108 comments 40. War by Laura Thalassa. War (The Four Horsemen, #2) by Laura Thalassa

5 stars. Feel this book lived up to its potential more than Pestilence. Enjoyed the heroine.

On Kindle TBR since 23/11/2022.

41. Troy Chimneys by Margaret Kennedy. Troy Chimneys by Margaret Kennedy

5 stars. Helping make up for my relatively mediocre reading month last month. 2 5 star books! I love the regency period and this is the story of Miles Lufton who dreams of a life in retirement at his country residence, Troy Chimneys, and his alter ego Pronto, a hard-drinking and hard partying MP. Loved this. It should be so much better known. Thanks to whoever donated it to Oxfam. Your loss is my gain.

On TBR since 26/06/2021.

42. Zoey Plays Games by Katherine Applegate. Zoey Plays Games (Making Out, #9) by Katherine Applegate

4 stars. Annoyed with Zoey as she is now messing around on Lucas which is hypocritical in view of her attitude to his misdemeanours in previous books. Still enjoying my read.

On TBR since 07/05/2022.
