Sara I always try to read the book first. I will refuse to watch the movie until I've read the book haha.

Sara Haha yes I agree completely!

For me it depends on what the book/movie is. I remember that when Divergent came out I had only gotten the book a day before and I was reading up until the movie started in the cinema. Although sometimes I like to have a visual idea of what the characters would look like! It really does depend.

Chelsea | 40 comments Most of the time I read the book before I watch the movie, but there were a few times when I didn't know that the movie was based off of a book.

message 5: by Victoria (new)

Victoria Scott I try to read the book first, but sometimes it's not worth the huge waiting list at the library if the movie has just come out. And if I watch and like the movie first, I appreciate just how great the book is when I get to read it :)

Mercy [Bookworm | Engr] (macythereader) | 5 comments I read the book first so I can criticize the movie. Sorry :D hehehehe

message 7: by Summer (new)

Summer (summerreem) I try to read the book first because I like creating the story in my head rather than watching someone else's version of it. But most of the time, I'm not that picky

Ella I always try to read the book first, so I can judge the movie and so I understand everything. I did this starting with Harry Potter: Book 1, Movie 1; Book 2, Movie 2; Book 3, Movie 3...

Yep, most of the time I see the movie and realize much later it was taken from a book.

If I happen to read a book first (and loved it), I'll watch the movie. Usually, it never compares to the book though.

I barely ever do the other way around. Too many books to read.

N.B. (nbroberts) | 7 comments I do love going to the movies, but if it's from a book, I usually like to read that first. It's harder to know if it came from a book too when they change the title of the movie too.

message 11: by Shanelle (new)

Shanelle (1wordnerd) I have learned my lesson not to watch the movie version of a book. I don't want to say all movie adaptions are bad but most of them are in my opinion. Too many of the small (but important) details get cut out or changed. I read the book and skip the movie...

Mikhail | 3 comments Book 1st then the movie... The movie is straight out of the book it enhances the experience... (you just can't put The characters thoughts or subtle nuances on film...)... Most of the time film deviates from the book & it is full to compare the differences

I think that I do a bit of both. I don't usually mind if the movie leaves out a few things, as long as they are not crucial to the story. It's the casting that either makes it or breaks it for me. For example, with Divergent I didn't like Shailene Woodley as Tris, but I thought Theo James was a great choice for Four. I do like Shailene though, I thought she was great in TFIOS.

Cynthia (fullycyn) | 13 comments Book! Because I have this bad habit that if I already watch the movie I definitely won't read the book. But if I read the book first, I will surely watch the movie ;)

message 15: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jessical1961) Almost always read the book first!

message 16: by meghann (new)

meghann (megs182) | 3 comments I will actually watch the movie first. I know, totally weird. I love movies just as much as books, but I know that the book is almost always going to be better. So if there is a movie I am really looking forward to, I'm going to see it before reading the book. This way I love the movie and then love the book even more. When I read the book first, I'm going to be disappointed with all the changes made and just not be able to enjoy the movie as much. Watching the movie first is a win-win for me. :)
