Mona is a wizard. But her power is limited to baking. She can stop bread from burning, or make gingerbread men dance, and that's about it. Not a significant power in her world where the head of the army can command lightning.
But through a set of circumstances, Mona is in a position as the only wizard who can save the city from enemy attack.
The best part of this book is the baked goods that Mona animates. Starting as accidental magic when she feels strong emotions, Mona learns to build on this ability to great effect. And along the way creates some very memorable fantasy characters.
Early in the book we meet Bob. He's a carnivorous, somewhat sentient sourdough starter. We also learn early on that she can make gingerbread men come to life and dance briefly. My favorites of her creations are (view spoiler)[her loyal gingerbread man familiar who sticks by her side through thick and thin, and the mini army of angry gingerbread men made with cayenne pepper and rat poison, sent to harass an enemy army. (hide spoiler)]
A fun read. It's not listed as the first book in a series, but the author leaves one thread untied at the end to allow for a sequel or even a full series.
