In July/August 2023 we will be reading literature from Belarus.

Titles for all three categories (classic, contemporary and short story/essay) can be nominated in this thread.

Feel free to discuss availability here as well, i.e. let us know beforehand if a nominated title is unavailable for you before we put up the polls. The polls will be set up in the middle of June.

I don't know where the last two months have disappeared to but OMG we are already approaching July ...
So although we might still be reading the titles from Hungary and / or even Azerbaijan I would nevertheless start the nominations for Belarus, a country that is on our agenda in July/August.
I would like to read and discuss Red Crosses by Sasha Filipenko for the category of contemporary lit.
For the category of classic lit I would like to nominate two titles by Svetlana Alexievich:
Voices from Chernobyl: The Oral History of a Nuclear Disaster and War's Unwomanly Face. I already read Secondhand Time: The Last of the Soviets which I can also recommend.

My research into literature from Belarus has resulted in finding most titles not having been translated into English so far. There is one more interesting one by Alhierd Baharevich who is an acclaimed contemporary writer from Belarus. The novel is called Alindarka's Children and deals with bilingualism and suppression of languages of minorities in autocratic states.

I would like to set up the polls the coming weekend, so that there will still be time to get hold of the chosen books, so if you have interesting titles from Belarus don't hesitate to nominate them in this thread :-)
