20.3 - Best Review - Cait S's Task: Thinly Veiled Marvel References

Alright, I’ll be honest with you all. I don’t know a whole lot about Norse mythology. What do I know a lot about? How flawless Chris Hemsworth is. I’ve done extensive research on this, in fact. So this task might not be mythologically accurate. But it is accurate to Marvel’s superior Avenger (sorry, Cap) and that totally counts.

NOTE: Books with the genres “graphic novel”, “sequential art”, or “comics” etc MAY be used for this task as long as they meet SRC requirements.

This is a one book task so choose one of the following options.
Required: State the option you chose when you post.

Option 1: Scared of a Little Lightning?
Thor, the bare necessities: Genetically blessed son of Odin, lots of thunder and lightning, laughs in the face of danger, fantastic hair (because he’s worth it) arrogant and can totally back it up but deep down he’s really kind of soft.
Read a book with the word thunder, lightning, or storm in the title, subtitle, or series name. To keep things simple, plurals and possessives are okay, but no other variations will be accepted.

Option 2: Science and Magic
Thor describes his home as a place where science and magic are one in the same.
Read a book with the genre science, science fiction, or magical realism on its main page. Genres may stand alone or be embedded.

Option 3: This Book, I Like It-- Another!
Thor is really enthusiastic about acquiring a second cup coffee. For me, reading is the most fun when I’ve been looking forward to something that I’m pretty sure I’m going to like.
So choose a series you have already started and enjoyed, and read the next book in it. Re-reads are NOT allowed. Books must be listed as a series number higher than 1 on Goodreads. Any other number is acceptable, wherever you are at with the series is fine.
Required: State that this book is not a re-read for you.

Option 4: He Is My Brother
Everybody has family drama. Thor...well, he might have slightly more than some others. But despite Loki being a less than swell guy (you know, to put it mildly), he is Thor’s brother and Thor never forgets it. Read a book where one of the main characters is someone’s brother or has a brother. This fact must be evident from the book’s summary on Goodreads.

Option 5: If He Be Worthy
In order to wield Mjolnir, Thor’s mighty hammer, the one attempting to pick it up must be worthy of the power. That means Thor is just as good on the inside as he is on the outside. Which is...really, really good.
Read a new to you book that has been highly recommended to you or that you’ve heard a lot about and see if it was worth the hype!
Required: State that this book is not a re-read for you.

That would have been an equally appropriate task name. Mmmm, Hemsworth. Sigh. Next time!

*hugs* Thank you, I love you <3

I'm so glad!!

And you are very welcome. I maybe or maybe not created that option for a similar reason for myself........... ;)

Yay! Thank you :)

I considered having an option like...if you prefer Thor spell out his name in the title and if you prefer Loki spell out his. But it was getting long and rambling as it was lol I do love me some Hiddleston though.

Sure, that's fine if that's the next book you're up to and you can get the kindle length verified :) Any in between books like that will work except for prequels (0.5, 0.6 type ones).

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 4447 comments A question about series books. I've been reading the Hercule Poirot series ... but not in order. How do I define the "next" in series? Do I just read the earliest that is NOT # 1 (and I HAVE already read #1 & #2)

In this case, "next" would be defined as the book immediately following whatever the last book you read was. So if the last you read was a #8, this task would be to read #9. In between ones being optional since it's rare to find them over 100 pages long.

So I suppose if you've been jumping around in a series, I would say the ruling there would be the same. Just whatever the immediate next book is based on the latest one you read.

That's so nice of you to say! I don't know if I'll ever get to make a 25 (I was, oh, 400 points away last season lol) so I may have gone a little overboard on long options for a 20 pointer. I was talking to Morgan like I WILL NEVER GET ANOTHER TASK! HAVE TO MAKE THIS GOOD! *nervous sweating* So it's great to see people enjoying it :)

I've told her the same thing Trish! This is the only task that I have a huge list of options for and I don't want to choose one. lol. Not quite Sophie's Choice over here, but...you know...it's a toughie.

I was definitely thinking about giving her mine and then she was like I'M ENTERING THE REVIEW POLL.....AND SHE WAS WINNING and I was like well crap...lol. Foiled again! *shakes fist*

She needs to hijack 25.11 so I don't have a hole in my list. lol.

Ha Ha! Actually the last one I read was Peril at End House in Sept 2014 - which IS #8! And I haven't read # 9 yet, so that will be my plan... (for now ...)

Lauren (laurenjberman) Can I read Shadow's Claim (The Dacians, #1; Immortals After Dark, #12.5) by Kresley Cole ?

It is book #1 in the Dacians series but book #12.5 in the Immortals After Dark series and the story is a direct continuation of book #11 even though it is a spin-off. Hope that makes sense.

That's a good question. Hrm. My first thought is to say no because I specified that it must be listed as a number higher than one and this one does include a listing as a #1 so it's kind of splitting hairs. But I'm not sure if that makes sense/is fair.

I'm going to message the mods and see what they think. Hold please! ;)

Okay, follow up response. After conferring with the mods, I'm going to say no on account of following the task description as closely as possible and almost making it easier to mod.

Sorry! Hopefully you've got another series going that will work here instead.

message 33: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (laurenjberman) Thanks Cait. Yup, I''ve got tons of other books that will work (I'm a series addict). No worries.

Yup, that's fine. I have three younger half brothers myself and I'd knock anyone out who tried to say they weren't my real brothers so ;) You're good to go! Enjoy your book!

message 36: by Nikki (new)

Nikki Love the task!, also a big fan of Chris Hemsworth, he even went to my old high school! :). Okay so I wasnt there at the time, but heck - let me cling on to some connection.

Okay so for Option 4 I thought the book The Romanov Sisters: The Lost Lives of the Daughters of Nicholas and Alexandra was somewhat fitting as its about the children and the surviving sisters after their parents and brother were killed. However the goodreads summary doesnt mention that bit, but wiki does here (Alexei was the brother) http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shooti... Is this book ok if I include the link to wiki ? Or do you want to keep it all in the goodreads summary. Not fussed if you do, theres lots of options in your task.

Thank you :)

message 37: by Cait S (new)

Cait S | 738 comments Hi Nikki! Thank you! I'm so glad you like it :)

I'm going to have to say no on that one just because I made the distinction of "must be evident on Goodreads". Had I thought about it sooner when tasks could still be edited I would have made an external link acceptable as well. But because that's been the rule for over half the challenge now, I think it's only fair to everyone that I stick to it.

Sorry! I hope you're able to find something else to fit here easily enough!

Do I have to explain how/who recommended it? I'm reading a book now that has been recommended via word-of-mouth by several friends ... would that count?

It's not a listed requirement, so no. You're welcome to if you'd like but just listing the book you're reading and that it is new to you is the only thing actually needed for the task to be posted correctly.
