Melindam | 4427 comments Hello Everyone!

Only 43 days 01 hour and 21 minutes until UNO 2023 starts. ;)

Just sayin'.

(view spoiler)

message 6: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 4427 comments Hello again,

I am Melinda from Hungary and UNO 2017 has been my very first team reading challenge that got me hooked fair and square.
It is also my favourite challenge, but I also love NBRC team challenges (Tower Teams, Wheel).

My favourite genres are classics, fantasy, golden-age detective fiction, history, romance. I am willing to dip my toes in almost any genres, except horror that will never be my cuppa.

I recently (re)discovered Georgette Heyer, Rosamunde Pilcher and Mary Stewart, so I am planning to read quite a few of their books in 2023.

Just like everyone else here (I suspect), I have a towering TBR list and hope I can knock off at least a few before adding more. 😉

Karen ⊰✿ | 3767 comments Hard to believe we are about to start our 9th year of UNO!
I started UNO in 2015 as a simple team challenge which is all about socialising rather than competition. Over that time I’ve had the immense and wonderful help of Elderwen, and then Annika and the last few years Melindam. We have a lot of fun chatting UNO and planning at the end of each year and hope you also enjoy playing 😊

For 2023 I am actually looking forward to knocking off some coloured covers that I’ve saved over the years. I’d like the opportunity to read The Inheritance Games (The Inheritance Games, #1) by Jennifer Lynn Barnes .
Otherwise I’m pretty open with my reading - except horror. I’m too squeamish 😬

message 8: by Catsalive (last edited Dec 20, 2022 01:26AM) (new)

Catsalive | 153 comments Hello. I found it. I've heard of this UNO challenge quite a few times, like "Hey, UNO's about to start" or "Are you doing UNO this year", over the last couple of years but no one ever actually mentioned where it was. It was sheer fluke I found this today after Melindam mentioned it at NBRC Wheelathon - I had a look at your groups :0)

I'll have to try it out in 2023.

I don't like horror either, it usually bores me. I love Georgette Heyer & Terry Pratchett.

Melindam | 4427 comments Hey Kylie,

glad you have found your way here. :)

Terry Pratchett is awesome. ;)

Tasha | 14 comments I would like to join in January but I've never heard of this, don't understand how it works.

message 11: by Insiyah (new)

Insiyah (insiyahxo) | 503 comments Hi, I'm Insiyah. This will be my third year of UNO. This was the challenge that got me hooked on to team challenges in the first place, and I'm more than a little obsessed with it.

I'm pretty picky about the types of books I read. I love classics and literary fiction, I'm into non self-help non-fiction, I'm loving auto & biographies, and I love the occasional book that has a weird je ne sais quoi. I'm going to try and actually read French books in 2021, and I'm hoping I'll be able to read Arabic as well.

Insiyah (insiyahxo) | 503 comments Tasha wrote: "I would like to join in January but I've never heard of this, don't understand how it works."

Essentially, you match your book title/author/character/place to an UNO card. If it's a cover card, your book cover also needs to match.

Go through the All About UNO thread, I think it'll be really helpful. Plus, once the challenge starts you'll get the hang of it pretty quickly.

Kimberly~☆♡Love of Books♡☆ (kimberbooklover) | 347 comments Cant wait!!!:))
It will be my third year playing.

Has it been that long already?! Oh wow, time flies!! :-D

Tammie | 1392 comments Good day everyone! I look forward to another fun UNO challenge...got my notifications on for this thread so I know what's what :)
I shouldn't probably do this, but I delete my old shelves (I like thinks neat and tidy), so I'm not sure how many years I've done this...5 maybe? It's fun...I'll encourage anyone to give it a try!

message 18: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 569 comments I do love UNO. This will be my 4th one. I've got some coloured covered waiting to be read that I have been saving.
I'm also glad there is over a month as it means I can read shorter books now and get my yearly challenge done and then in January I can get some short books off my TBR list and get a good start to the year.

message 19: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 1864 comments Hi all!
I'm Nanci from Richmond, Virginia. I started UNO (I'm pretty certain) during my second year on Goodreads, so 2016. I had no idea that you had just started it in 2015, Karen! I'm like you, Tammie, in that I clear my old shelves, so it might have been 2017, but at any rate, it's been a long time! I do recall the first time I ever played our captain ghosted us and I blindly volunteered to step up as captain. Phew! That was an interesting time, not knowing what I was doing! Everyone was so helpful and it was so fun and the end result was fine. After that I've usually served as co-captain, which I love to do. Even if you don't understand the game before it starts, sign up! It's so much fun!

That wordy paragraph takes care of most of the intro. Additionally, my favorite genre is historical fiction and like Karen and catsalive I'm not a horror reader. I am hoping to knock out some of my colored covers on my TBR list.

Kristie | 5928 comments Karen - I feel like we have been doing UNO forever! lol 2015 seems about right to me, but I probably would have guessed longer! :) It has grown SO much!

Tasha - Definitely check out the "All About UNO" thread. There's lots of info in there and if you do sign up, your team can help you out. Many players have been doing it for multiple years.

Tammie - I also delete my shelves. Otherwise, I'd have too many going back 9 years now. I just keep the last one for some reason. I'm glad I do because I took a break from team challenges and just looked at my shelf to find that my last one was in 2019! I may have to jump back on board.

message 21: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 2147 comments My first UNO looks to have been 2017. I'm actually surprised I only missed out on two seasons of UNO, and will always be grateful to the people who suggested I try it out! :)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1571 comments Hi all! I've been part of UNO since 2017 . . . I can't believe it's been that long already! Aside from UNO, I regularly participate in the Tower Teams and Wheel challenges in the NBRC group. UNO was my first team challenge though!

My favorite genre is romance, but I like lots of different types of romance (historical, fantasy, etc.) so it never gets old to me!

Some books I'm looking forward to most in 2023 are A Fire in the Flesh and A Soul of Ash and Blood.

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 1505 comments Yay, it's Uno time again.. my absolutely favourite challenge. I've been playing since 2016 according to my shelves. Not a deleter here, I think I've got every book and every challenge ever read still on my shelves! Well since I've joined Goodreads anyway.

I love finding the colour covers... and note them between Unos for future reference. This year I've been saving Carrie Soto Is Back by Taylor Jenkins Reid with a lovely yellow cover!

Happy Uno everyone.. have a great time playing.

I actually didn’t have a shelf in 2015, so you may be the same? I’m not sure why. I think I just assumed it would be a one off challenge 😂🤔
2015 Teams are here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
I recognised Fraggle Rock and Betty Boop. Seems the first was my team and the latter E’s! Must be why it stuck in my head.

And yay! Carrie Soto! Great pick

Trio | 287 comments You're going to LOVE Carrie Soto... sooooo good. Have you read Malibu Rising yet? I did Carrie first, and it's a good thing (don't look at the spoiler if you haven't lol) (view spoiler) 😂

message 28: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Looks like 2018 was my first Uno.
If I remember correctly, I was told that Uno is the gateway drug to all of the other challenges. Yup. Totally true. And so fun.

My favorite genres are Sci-fi, speculative fiction and anything that is well written. I will, of course, read anything that the team needs. However else would I have read so many one star books? (And, found some brilliant ones that I would otherwise have never picked up.)

Already looking for blue, red, green and yellow on my TBR!!!!

Laura | 1144 comments Hello all! This will be my 6th Uno Challenge. I didn’t partake in the last couple of years due to grad school, but I’m back! I served as a co-captain twice, I believe.

I read a lot of mysteries and also love historical fiction.

Looking forward to starting again!

Yes.. I read Malibu Rising.. and even did DQ's over in the other group. Enjoyed it but Daisy Jones and the Six is still my favourite read of hers. Hope it isn't stuffed up in the TV adaption!

message 34: by Nanci (new)

JoJo_theDodo | 320 comments Hi Bookish friends 🙂

This will be my second time participating in the UNO challenge. I really enjoyed being on a team and reading books along with new bookish friends on my team. The challenge definitely helped me get through a lot of the books on my big TBR stacks. I really don’t have a favorite genre, I like to see what others are reading and enjoying. It helps me add more 5 star reads to my never ending TBR 😂🤣

Perfectly said, Jenny.

As far as reading challenges and me are concerned: UNO was Karen's answer to Dune's SPICE. 🤭

It took me to TT and Wheel. ❤️

For anyone new, don't worry too much about the rules. Your captains and teammates will help.

Melanie (mvalente89) | 296 comments Hello, I'm Melanie. UNO is one of the challenges I look forward to most as it's so much fun. I've played for a few years and I've also done a bunch of challenges in the NBRC group (Wheel being my favorite over there).

I'm mainly a romance reader (historical, contemporary, suspense, or paranormal) but I also read quite a few thrillers with the occasional urban fantasy or sci-fi.

I've been holding on to some color covers for this challenge, so here's hoping I'll be able to use them.
