What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

I read this book when I was in high school I think, around 2009-2012. It might be a series, but I think it's a single novel.
A young orphan boy becomes apprenticed to an assassin. There is also a girl at the beginning of the book, she has a scarred face. The main character finds the girl later in the story and falls in love with her. There is a variety of magical spheres in the world... the red one is in a volcano.

The main character becomes the owner of a sphere (something magical... I think it was a sphere?) that makes it so he [SPOILERS] comes back to life when he dies. Whenever he dies, he pays the price with the life of one of his friends[END SPOILERS]
