madrano | 23666 comments Opinion requested, please.

Do you think #12- A trilogy. Part of a trilogy. (You don't have to read all 3) means a longer series, more than 20 books, would work for this prompt? Or are we strictly thinking trilogies.

I wanted to read the 3rd installment of Louis L'Amour's Sackett series, but have others which may fit the bill.

message 4: by John (new)

John | 1943 comments In this case, I infer it as an actual trilogy, rather than part of a series.

I also think a trilogy. But we need only read 1 of the 3.

Bella (Kiki) (coloraturabella) | 5363 comments I also think it's a trilogy only. I chose Mantel's WOLF HALL trilogy.

Thanks for the input on trilogy & # 12. It makes sense. As mentioned, i have several options, L'Amour's books are a once-a-year selection for me.

I've flipped through WOLF HALL and I'm sure I'll love it, madrano. I really hope to have the time to read the entire trilogy. It sounds fascinating.

Alias Reader (aliasreader) | 29379 comments On September 23, 2003 there are 100 days left to the year.

How are you doing on your 100 challenge ? If I counted correctly, I need 32 more prompts to complete 100 book prompts. Not bad.

message 16: by John (new)

John | 1943 comments I haven't counted the number of completed prompts. However, it's done a great job of clearing my TBR pile. I made a preliminary list early on, with a dozen or so titles left for the year; always realized I wouldn't come close to all of them.

Like John, my TBR has been snipped, thanks to this challenge. I haven't counted but i suspect i've completed around 60 challenges, although i still haven't updated my list from our vacation.

You are doing great, Alias. Do you think you will complete the list?

message 19: by Alias Reader (new)

Alias Reader (aliasreader) | 29379 comments I don't think I'll get to 100, but I will try to get close. I have 32 prompts left and since one book can fit multiple prompts that will help.

message 20: by madrano (new)

madrano | 23666 comments Good luck!

I checked my list & i have 40 prompts left. However, there are 2 or 3 where i've read a book (haven't posted it) but hope to read a better one, as i felt the first wasn't really what i feel was needed. Yes, i am still that compulsive. Let's see how i feel about that in November. LOL!

madrano | 23666 comments I've read six of the suggested books and liked them. Of those, my favorite was The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society--Mary Ann Shaffer, set in Guernsey during their WWII German occupation.

However, i selected We Need to Talk About Kevin--Lionel Shriver and i stopped reading it 20-30 pages in. It failed me on several points, as well as somewhat triggered feelings i didn't care to visit.

Alias, i thought her Should We Stay or Should We Go was interesting. As i began Kevin, i realized the personalities of the main characters were too similar and, frankly, i didn't particularly like them, either. So, no more.

message 29: by Alias Reader (new)

Alias Reader (aliasreader) | 29379 comments Since it is already November, I thought I would put some ideas out there for the 2024 book challenge. As these things take a bit of time for me to set up.

I was wondering if people wanted to change things up now that we have experience with the 100 challenge.

I was thinking of these options.

12 Prompts However, one book per prompt.
25 Prompts. 2 prompts per book allowed
50 prompts. unlimited matches per book - like we do now
100 prompts. same as this year.

Additionally, allow each member who is joining the challenge 2024 challenge to add 1 additional prompt to the challenge. This way if one prompt really doesn't suit you, you will have other options. We did that this year. We ended up with 5 extra prompts. So if one of the 100 didn't suit you, you had 5 extra prompts to select from.

Anyone have a preference or other ideas ?

message 30: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey | 991 comments I like the idea of switching it up a bit this year! I don't have any strong preferences, but I'll think about if I have any additional ideas.

I've found myself straying from the list a little this year. For some of the prompts I've read multiple applicable books, but still have about 30 prompts left, yikes!

message 31: by Alias Reader (new)

Alias Reader (aliasreader) | 29379 comments Lindsay, I'm happy with how many I've completed so far. However, like you I've read multiple books that would fit a category. That's cool. It just makes me aware of where my reading preferences are.

I think the format of 100+, as it was this year, worked for me, but variety is the spice, right? I don't feel any sense of competition or "gotta get it done" with the challenge as it was (even though I am not likely to fill all the prompts this year), but the variety of prompts did open up my thinking about balancing what I naturally want to read with what might be interesting to read in genres or areas that I am not necessarily drawn to.

The other ideas are interesting - if we went to 25 or 50, for instance, it's likely that some might put more than one book in for some of the prompts, rather than one book filling multiple prompts.

message 33: by Alias Reader (new)

Alias Reader (aliasreader) | 29379 comments I'm happy you enjoyed the challenge, James. Thank you for the input. We have around 7 weeks or so to decide.

Interesting options. I'll have to think about it. When seeking books for prompts, i found i often had 2 or 3 (once 5!) options on hand. Thanks for getting our brains started along this line now, while we are still looking at the '23 list.

If i can just control that "gotta get it done" sensation, i'm sure i could enjoy the process better. Instead, i seem to look at it as a "this WILL get more off my TBR!" Which, while good, also limited my choices, in a strange way. My first step may be to severely edit my TBR.

ANYway, i'll get back to you.

message 35: by Michele (new)

Michele | 629 comments First let me say that the 2023 list was comprehensive and much appreciated. I was hyper-enthused till Halloween, when I began to wear down. I lpoved doing research to find books that I already owned but had not read. My favorite activity was naming my favorite book in each category that I had read already.

I didn’t like finding books based on colors, initials, numbers of words in the title, etc. I had some trouble finding books from other countries that I hadn’t already read. Eg Australia. I’d read the top six or more on the lists I looked up, but my fave about Australia wasn’t on any list. I wanted to read a new (to me) Orhan Parmuk, but it didn’t fit by the time I found it.

I’m thinking that the broader categories suit me better. And fewer of them. I think every American should be encouraged (compelled) to read a book that utilizes magical realism. Maybe we could read books in translation from three different countries, or Best Biography, or a memoir written by a woman author. Stuff like that.
We might also contract to read 50 books in 2024 and choose to our own in any category or number. Too many ideas!

message 36: by madrano (new)

madrano | 23666 comments Michele wrote: "My favorite activity was naming my favorite book in each category that I had read already...."

Neat idea!

Oddly, the books on color was a category that found 8 such titles on my TBR. However, they were so old, that i could only find one from my library. So much for an abundance of color-titled books.

Michele wrote: " I think every American should be encouraged (compelled) to read a book that utilizes magical realism....."

I think this is one way we got so many prompts. I know i added 4 or 5 because i felt we should all read, for example, a book written pre-1800s. No doubt this came from pleasant earlier experiences with such tomes but i also thought it would "stretch" everyone's reading brains. Or not, as it appears. Heck, i've been reading my selection for that prompt for two months now!

This is one reason i'm leaning toward a different version of the Challenge.

message 37: by John (new)

John | 1943 comments Im voting for the 25 books/2 prompts option. This year's challenge did a solid job with my TBR pile, so not as many choices there going forward!

message 38: by madrano (new)

madrano | 23666 comments Every time i see a post here, i reconsider my thoughts. Likely this is because i haven't read much this month and am unsure if i'll read anything next month, either. Therefore a lighter number appeals to me. Today, that is. :-)

message 39: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey | 991 comments I'm up for any variation mentioned above.

These challenges always get me to pick up books I'd otherwise skip, and I love seeing what everyone else chooses.

I suspect I'll be 10-15 prompts short this year, some of which I was hoping to achieve (A book by Agatha Christie, or a book about a world leader, for example - I just haven't gotten there yet!)
Maybe some of those will make my Determination List for next year (I completely neglected mine from this year, oops!)

message 40: by madrano (new)

madrano | 23666 comments Lindsey wrote: "Maybe some of those will make my Determination List for next year (I completely neglected mine from this year, oops!)..."

I hear you one that front, Lindsey. I intentionally kept my DL count low and still won't complete it. Bummer.

message 41: by Alias Reader (last edited Nov 30, 2023 05:04PM) (new)

Alias Reader (aliasreader) | 29379 comments I'm also leaning towards 25 prompts. Though I was thinking one prompt per book. But if everyone wants 2 that's find with me. People can choose to do two or not, whatever works for you. We're easy here when it comes to challenges. :)

I think this will allow people to read books in the coming year that have nothing to do with the challenge.

I also was going to add that each person who intends to participate can add an additional prompt (not decided if 1 or two) Those extra prompts can be used it you don't care for the prompts on the main list. So basically, like we did this year, the extra prompts can be used to swipe out one of the 25 on the main list. So this does not add to the challenge number. It will still be 25.

I already have the main list made up. I just need to cull it down to 25.

I'm guessing I'll set it up mid December so that will give people a heads-up.

Does this work for you ?

Thanks for all your work on this Alias. What you propose sounds fine, but whatever way the challenge ends up, I'm in.

I'll be spending some of December filling in prompts with books that I've read but just haven't reported on or matched up. I suspect that I will probably end up somewhere in the 60% range, but we'll see.
